Post a Report
Fishing Area: Northeast Florida
Posted By: Rick Hill Date Posted: 04-20-2004

Westerly winds have blown what had been some hot fishing water off the ledge, so this past weekend was pretty slow out of St. Augustine. Fishing on Bob Mercer's 43 Tiara Couble Eagle, we had to run 55 miles to 800 feet before finding any blue water worth dragging a hook. A few boats were in the area, but not many producing any fish. We put 2 small (

Wow!!

I would say it is about time,to update these "reports". We're starting to wind down from another great sailfish season here out of Ponce Inlet/New Smyrna. The New Smyrna Billfish Invitational was a huge success this year with over 260 Sailfish and 2 Blue Marlin released for 32 boats for 2 day's fishing. "THAT'S HOT" I think everyone has probably heard rumors of our fishing for years. That pretty much solidifies it.
I personally want to thank Capt. Wink(Adjuster),V.J. (Boneshaker), John Mumford (Overeasy), Mitch (NUCO2), and the guy's from St. Augustine who came here for the tournament or just to fish the "Fall Season". The extra boats sure make it nice for those few of us who charter fish out of here and target sails on a day to day basis. Looking back at the log book it wasn't but a few day's after sea's subsided from Isabell that action heated up quick with catches in the double digits. The boat's from St. Augustine in the El Pescado tournament had some real good fishing to start it off with.
Now, with just a few boats fishing each day, we are still seeing and hearing of catches of 4,5,and 6 releases a day with some decent Dolphin fishing mixed in. If anything heats up late season I will try to report back.

P.S. Thanks once again guy's!

November 25th saw flat seas and plenty of action. Right Side released 6 sailfish, but should've caught more. A few mishaps lost 3 others, and we saw 12 or so fish. The bites were pretty consistent in the 225 ft depths, with the fish concentrated. When you find one, there's usually more right there! Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Yesterday was another good day. Right Side was 8 for 14 and the Heavy Hitter went 14 for 18! Hopefully they'll stick around for awhile.

Fishing has remained pretty good in the area, at least when the weather allows us to get out. Last Friday, Right Side was 12 for 19 on the sails, with 3 35lb wahoo and some dolphin mixed-in. Other boats have been reporting nice catches as well. Robert Johnson on the Jody Lynne II has been catching several wahoo a day, along with double figures in the tuna category. The best sail bite is south of St. Augustine, closer to Ponce. Good luck to all!

Fishing is still great out of Daytona Beach. Catching sailfish, wahoo, and yes even dolphin still. Grouper and snapper have been biting good on the bottom. Seas have been great. Most sailfish bites have been up to 7 per day for some boats. Still looking for the big bite like last year.

Thanks Louis for posting your report for the El Pescado Tournament. I just wanted to correct the spelling of the boat name, it's LOR -A- DI . I also agree with your latest comments regarding the Ponce Inlet boats, we too, did not agree with Wallis' comments.

Wallis, please do not speak for the LOR -A- DI team in any more of your derogatory comments. Let's just fish and have fun !

I apologize, rules do win or lose a tournament, but everyone has to abide by the rules. I should have said the scoring structure does not win or lose a tournament. I sorry that you are still bitter about us winning last year.

I have no problem with you disagreeing with me, but I was just trying to figure out how you can say that the rules dont decide a tournament. A boat being six minute late won you $40,000.00 last year in the El Pescado, but I guess you forgot about that, old buddy!!

We disagree with the last posted report. This is the opinion of a few and not all of Ponce Inlet. Three boats from Ponce fished the El Pescado Grande tournament and as usual it was a great, fun tournament. Fishing was a little slower this year, but the winners were:
1st place - Lori-Dai from Ponce with 6 sailfish.
Congratulations Capt. Victor and crew.
2nd place - Bet-A-Buc from St.Augustine with the only Blue Marlin. Congratulations to Buck and crew.
3rd place - My Bree from Jax. with 5 sails. Congratulations to Capt Greg and crew.
Just goes to prove that rules don't win or lose a tournament, tight lines, right minds and the grace of God do.
We would like to thank the tournament committee and Camachee Cove for all their hard work. The good Lord willing we will be back next year. Cookie Cutter.

The sails are starting to bite off Ponce Inlet with boats getting 3-6 bites a day, not that any of you would know up there. The El Pescado tournament is coming up shortly, but will be without the support of the boats from our inlet due to ridiculous rule changes. Last year a sailfish was worth 100 points and a blue marlin worth 400, after the club members had it handed to the by the "Ponce" boats they decided to change it all around. Now someone would have to catch 13 sails to beat 2 blue marlin. Guess they think it so much easier to catch 13 sails than drag plastic around on their 130 wides while drinking a martini. Lets get real guys!! And this is supposed to be a WBS event, wow!! Who is in charge of this stuff. Good luck on your tournament. We all hope you have fun without US.

"The Other Woman" has returned home to Ponce Inlet and we fished for the first time 4/25 it was 6'and sporty but the fish were waiting and we were the only diner in town. We had Mark badzinski with us from Marlin Magazine and the wahoo and Dophin bite was on. We caught 6 wahoo up to 50lbs and 8 dolphin with 2 in the 40 lb range, we also fumbled a Blue Marlin with some of the crew under the weather. All the fish were holding in the same spot 35 miles east of ponce. The run is a little further but today well worth it. tight lines

The warm weather has kept the sailfish North! The Right Side went 14 for 16 yesterday, this time with Captain Dennis Rosa at the helm. The group went 6 for 6 out of 2 tripleheaders, and 6 for 6 with 3 doubles. The anglers had their A-Game today, starting off 11 for 11 before lunch! The bite definitely slowed between 12 and 2, but picked up again late. The fish were holding in 350-400 feet of water almost due east of St. Augustine. Numerous other boats had success as well. Tight Lines!

The sailfish bite in Northeast Florida remains redhot! Captain Hunter Brant and some friends on the Right Side went 18 for 30 today out of St. Augustine. John Hulsey aboard Double Trouble caught 8 or so, and freejumpers were all over. We're hoping these fish stay, but were expecting them to move south any day. Tight Lines!

The bite out of Ponce has remained pretty good now that the weather has calmed again. On Friday, November 9th, Heavy Hitter with David Grubbs caught 8 sailfish, and Right Side, out of St. Augustine, went 9 for 11. Numerous other boats caught as well. It's my understanding the fishing slowed a little on Saturday & today, but sails were still being caught.

The hottest sailfish bite out of Ponce Inlet in years has been postponed due to bad weather. On October 22nd the "Heavy Hitter" with Capt. David Grubbs caught 41 sailfish!! With the news spreading like wildfire around the inlet everyone was out on Tuesday the 23rd with the "TrinaDai" capained by Aaron Watson taking the high hunt with 50! Capt. Foz Gibson abourd the "Inlet Magic" caught 40 with the "Heavy Hitter" out again and catching 21. The "Heavy Hitter" ended up with 72 sailfish in 3 days. Proving that Northeast Florida can produce high numbers of sailfish also. All the captains said that the sails were balling bait in every direction.
