Happy Easter to all you hardcore angling families. Today Aprils Fool, but no fooling in this report. Last month tons of hours in the water and the report goes as follows. The Puerto Rican trench is in the transitional months. The mahi mahi are gone in the north east of the island (although more abundant in the south west) the only mahis go running with birds and are bigger in size but less abundant. No wahoos and of the tuna caught black fin and bonito. What has been good is the King Mackerel run, having multiple strikes and good size. The transition to warmer waters and Summer marlin season is happening now. Can not wait to put away the light tackle and bring out the big guns for the Blue suit conferences. till next bite Capt Luis Iglesias aka Church |

Whats Up!!! Hello again from the island of enchantment. The fishing this two weeks goes as follow. January 8 to 11, strong trades winds mostly from the east in the 20+ knots and seas 7-9 ft short period making conditions extremely sporty so only inshore was the option. Saturday 12 a strong cold front generated large long period swell 11ft and although there was wind in the 15 to18 knots the seas were nice to fish. Lots of Mahi mahi action and Kimi a Bertram 33 had a nice blue marlin in the 250# range. The scenery stayed the same till tuesday January 15. Wednesday January 16 the wind built up again and as the swell diminished the short period swell came back making conditions sporty but the winds staying under the 20 knots. SST in the trench have fluctuated from 78-80 degrees and water quality has stayed low. Conditions should get better soon in the North East of PR although the reports from the West and Mona Channel have been hot for the Large Mahi Run 60# bull and cows in the 30# range in numerous amounts have been landed. till Next Bite Capt Luis Iglesias AKA Church |

Bill Wraps wishes you tons of Health and many hours in the water. 2013 started great with a nice Mahi Mahi bite, few macks, Bonitos and Cudas. The Seas were very nice, with light winds and long period swells. The scenario changed 01/05/13 when a High pressure system created High winds in the 23 knots from the east and 7-9 foot swell from the north east making conditions really sporty. Lets see how the week develops but in the mean time we are going to do some hardcore Tarpon fishing in the back country. Happy Three Kings Day!!!! Capt Church till next bite |

Happy Fathers Day to all you Salty Dogs!!!!!! Here in PR the weather has been great, all most no rain, prevailing south winds with almost flat seas and really hot days. We have been fishing the PR trench and even did a little stop in St Thomas to visit the Red Hook area. Of the times we went out scored some mahis and bonitos, but no billfish. The south drop of PR also was producing some mahis ( thanks for the reports from the Lockwood crew). The charter boats in st thomas were also fishing close scoring more of the light tackel kings and jacks. At the dock A at American Yacht Harbour the reports were slow for the past May moon ,Some boats were going out 11 days in a row and only seen 8 fish which is low by North drop standards. We will be fishing hard the following week to see the rising June moon and report on the Billfish bite. I have a good story to tell. After 16 years in the charter business and over 30 years fishing there is always a first time for everything. That is why the book of fishing is written down day by day , charter by charter. "Rod and his 6 year old son both experienced fisherman from Florida, want to go deep sea fishing with heavy tackle, but they taste is aimed towards Aston Martins and their pocket is for Toyota. Technically they want to fish half days at half price. We at Bill Wraps thinking that our client specially kids deserve a nice day in the water and a shot to score a pellagic fish settled a short half day one time offer special price. Fishing is fishing and is not harvesting, collecting or catching. Also the Atlantic Ocean is very vast and we do not have fenced ranches to heard the fish in to rodeo them later. We went out in our fully rigged Hatteras 36 with four 50s, one 30 and three teasers reels. we racked my favorite PR trench are for 3 hours and get Skunked. At the dock the client says his dissapoint ment of not catching fish, so I explained to him that deep sea fishing is like any other fishing some times you get skunked. He explains to me that in Florida were he is from deep sea fishing is dropping lines in, that for me is called deep droping, bottom fishing, vertical jigging etc. The big problem was at the time of payment his credit card was declined 3 times and he was still complaining about payment and saying no fish no pay. At the end payment was made with a grind in his Face . What we learned, never let anyone put price to your services and that deep sea fishing with heavy tackel is dropping lines in over a thousand foot of water. Better bring the Kristals next time. Ja jA. till next bite Capt Luis Iglesias aka Church |

The seas still weren't flat they were sporty. Fished the protected waters for two days with families with youngsters and had fun with the mighty cudas, smokers and mutton snappers. For the past few days there was a lot of talk around the docks of the south drop ( Vieques Caribbean side) having some Bill fish action, mostly blues in the 60-100 # range. Fished hard on the 3/15 the south drop for a full day and it was another episode of " you should have been here yesterday" The water was electric blue, tons of huge flying fish everywhere, marlin weed and Sargasso patches in well defined currents. But got skunky reggae muffin, not even one bite, raised or anything. The only screaming from the reels came from the mighty cudas and smokers as we ran in the shallows. We still will be fishing hard this weekend and next week so sit still for the next report. till next bite capt Luis Iglesias |

The high pressure and wind built swells have continued for the past two weeks. Rain clouds have affected the area and create squally conditions. Water spout material. The fishing in the trench has not produce any billfish at the time (full moon on 3/8/12) the seas haven't helped much. Most of the fishing in the Caribbean side. Catching cero mackerels , jacks (blue runners),King Mackerels, Bonita, cudas and mutton snappers. So the reels are still screaming. till next bite Capt Luis Iglesias aka Church |

the conditions this week went from smooth long period swell and light winds. to sporty wind swells and 20+knot winds. Big wahoos caught near the edge of the trench also fast moving boobis with feeding frenzy mahis but nice size. Fished the trench from Fajardo and two over nights in Culebra. Most of the action were smokers, little tunnys , sharks and cudas. need to wait till Thursday for the seas to settle down and fish the moon of march to see how the billfish action goes. till next bite capt Luis Iglesias AKA church |

Back to Back all week non stop The blue water very close and the seas have stayed awesome for fishing extravaganza. Plenty of currents and bait, but the fish have been scarce both in the North trench and south waters. Many boats deep dropping for queen snappers and having tons of action. The whales giving many National Geographic moments. One blue seen sun bathing and never lite up for our baits. Two mahi sancochos (Ivan got his water). Most of the action with Cero Macks, King macks and Cudas. Many years of experience in the charter business fishing with experts and all the way to the novice. One thing is for sure Having kids on board is another story. Their patience is not the same and from start the only thing that they want is to be the gladiator in a one to one fight with a sea monster. Those situations are what shows who are the experienced captains, you need to satisfy the gladiator and also the parents that are the ones paying you. so fish hard, look for the strikes and if the bite is low go to drastic choices of bringing the fish to the boats, so those kids have the time of their life which they will remember for ever. till next bite capt luis Iglesias |

Happy Valentines!!! Finally Great Seas the weather cleared up and the blue water got really close. This week the mixed bag action got even hotter, caught a few mahis in the beginning of the week and fought a Blue marlin of the 200# range for a while and pull the hook in the tail walking. Plenty of bait everywhere and numerous bird piles with feeding frenzy. Mixed action in the frenzys: Rainbow runners, Black fin tuna, Bonita, Skip jacks, cero mackerels. Also by catch a few sharks that went for tunas that we hooked. The Humpback migration started having plenty of National Geographic moments given by those majestic marine mammals. till next bite Capt Luis Iglesias |

High pressure has prevailed over the last weeks. Creating high winds and wind built, making sea conditions rough and sporty. Most of the fishing was made towards the sea mounts by Vieques. Producing nice size King macks and Cero Macks. also amber jacks and cudas. The PuertoRican trench still producing mahis , wahoos and we are encountering more frequently bird piles of tuna. (skip jacks , black fin and yellow fin). Tons of bait are nice invitation for bill fish in the area. Whale migration hasn't started yet but soon we will start encountering those majestic humpbacks. The rain also has been a factor making our runs longer to the fishing ground due to the fact of green water full of sediment and brackish water. Run out to the blue. till the next bite Capt Luis Iglesias aka church |

High wind and wind built sea have predominated in the past days. definitely the mixbag is still happening, Mahis, Wahoos, Yellowfins, Skipjacks and of course the mighty cudas. The Billfish scavenger hunt is on with the moon cycle going up, but in general the billfish bite is slow both in San Juan and Fajardo Area. One boat saw a billfish today and that is a good sign. Saludos from PR The week started slow with only some Smokers and cudas. although the full moon was on the 9th we did not encounter any bilfish in the week following the moon. Seas were windy but fishable. Still Mahis and wahoos are the word of the week. went 7-1 (mahi-wahoo) today Cold front coming and seas turning sporty. tight lines Capt Luis Iglesias |

Happy New Year to all of you. The fishing has been strange, Mahis in almost dry land (40ft) to huge tunas blind strikes ( no birds and green water) and plenty of wahoos. The billfish action has not been that hot at least in the days before the moon and Sails were caugth at 20 miles out that is unusual for them. Nice wahoo action around structures north of Culebra island. The seas are good for fishing with long period swells and light winds. The High light of the week was a 60#+ yellowfin fought stand up on 20 test spinning rod combo. The client saw her close but pull the hook after a hour fight. tight lines Capt Luis Iglesias aka Church |

the swells settled down but the wind was hauling all week, creating a short wave swell that made the fishing a little bumpy. Although the new moon was Dec 24th the billfish bite got hot around the marlin alley, some boats hitting grand slams and multiple species bites. Mahis and wahoo were biting, around the town of Dorado dona eva caught a bull mahi 65#. Most of the action happened around the 8 to 9.5 miles and the water was mixed. Plenty of mackarel and cudas in the shallows. today will go out again. Tight Lines and Happy New Year Capt Luis Iglesias |

October was a great month for billfishing on the north & west coasts. The west coast fishing was still very good with boats like BLUE BIRD, AMIGO and AMIGO all releasing many blue marlin in the Mona Passage. BLUE BIRD had one particular day that they were 4 for 7. In San Juan fishing was also very good with blues, whites, sails and spearfish all showing up for the October moon. I fished 8 days on the north side and we were 5 for 6 on blues, 1 for 2 on whites and 2 for 5 on sails. Of the 8 days, 5 were half days and 3 were full day trips. We also caught many big dorado up to 43 pounds. We sighted some nice yellowfins two days in a row but could not make them bite. The November moon should be very good with the best chance of the season for some grand slams. |

Amazing fishing on the west coast of Puerto Rico. The Club Deportivo del Oeste in Joyuda hosted the 22nd annual Light Tackle blue marlin tournament from September 16-19. A total of 62 boats fished 3 days on 30 pound line and released a staggering 214 blue marlin! That is an average of 3.45 blue marlin per boat for the event. Top boat was 400cc with 8 blue marlin tagged & released. The amount of double and triple header bites was incredible. Both LADY ANNE and DONA LUCY caught and released triple headers. Several boats reported getting covered up in pack attacks of 4 to 5 blues at the same time. Over 50 double headers were reported to the tournament control headquarters. The same hot fishing should remain well into October. I'll probably be out there again thursday so I'll report then. Tight lines, Capt. Juan Carlos Torruella. |

Discover the Caribbean Tarpon Paradise this winter Hi my name is David Mark and I’m addicted…to Tarpon Fishing and we discover Fly Fishing paradise In the west coast of Puerto Rico. How to get there I took the short flight from Florida to Puerto Rico (Rafael Hernández Airport in Aguadilla ) The airport is the second inte...rnational airport in Puerto Rico in the region of Porta del Sol, Puerto Rico's west coast picked up a rental car and drove 1 hours to Boqueron area. Capt.Pochy is the pioneer developer of Boqueron Bay Inshore Tarpon fishery and the only fly fishing guides in this region. They live to fish and spend all their time on the water or tying flies. Capt.Pochy knowledgeable, and dedicated to finding fish. The area is home to a significant population of year-round resident tarpon. Plenty of larger fish also the regions bays, lagoon and estuaries throughout the year. The big Tarpon are present, presumably to take advantage of the warmer waters and plentiful forage. In my time with Capt.Pochy we saw hardly any other anglers amongst an immense amount of great water. We found tarpon rolling in the mangroves and snook crashing baitfish. We also had some great sight fishing for blue runners over hard flats. The Boqueron Bay Tarpon trip for anglers interested in two to five days of serious Tarpon fishing. For anglers simple hotel based accommodations, uncrowded waters, straightforward travel logistics, and skilled motivated guides, this is the trip! I was met by Capt.Francisco (pochy) Rosario, my guide for the next few days our of Boqueron bay Cabo Rojo. On this portion my trip I was joined by my fishing friend, Buck. Once Pochy loaded our equipment into his truck he poured us cold Piña Coladas which we enjoyed on the short drive to the boat. This was Buck’s first tarpon trip ever and he managed to hook /jump three fish and land one in his first day of fishing. One encounter that neither of us will ever forget started with a perfect lead and a super visual/violent take less than 30 feet from the boat! I have to say Buck is one of the luckiest fly fishermen I have ever met. It seemed that every time he had a rod in his hand the fish would come to our boat. One time he just stood up and said, “ There’s one” in his charming southern accent , plopped his fly out, stripped and wiggled his fly twice and the fish ate it. Buck actually is an accomplished angler and though he made it look easy at times, we had our struggles. Two of the days I was in high heaven with wads of fish rolling and daisy chaining all around me. Though my ability to consistently feed these fish was limited, I did manage to feed a few and fought my personal best on my last cast of the trip. I even missed my flight home due to fighting this beautiful beast. Tarpon took me on and off a flat, through a deep blue water , and ultimately broke my leader off . Tarpon fishing in the Boqueron Bay on fly is for everyone. You must be ready to hunt fish, face light winds . The stronger the caster, the better your chances are. Leading a moving fish with a 15 mph crosswind or hitting a laid up tarpon on the nose is anything but easy! I recommend allotting at least four days to such a trip taking into account that longer stays increase your chance to more Tarpon. Most of the boat runs are from 15 minutes to about an 1/2 hour. Each day I saw hundreds of Tarpon, jumped between five and twelve from 25 to 75 pounds, and ultimately landed between one and five fish every day of the trip. I was very impressed with the entire experience. With innumerable opportunities to sight cast with 10-weight rods to tarpon in the 30 to 150 pound class. Space is limited so let Capt.Pochy know as soon as possible if you are interested to visit Boqueron Bay for more infomation visit his website: http://www.lighttackleadventure.8k.com/ Puerto Rico is the “secret” hotspot just a few hours from any major airport in the US mainland. NO PASSPORT REQUIERD FOR U.S.A CITIZENS. This is a fishery that makes for lifetime memories |

The weather wasn't the best with a lot of wind and rain but it did get better later in the week. We got some nice wahoo up to 48# And red and yellow eye snapper and grouper. Also small blackfin tuna but no billfish this trip. |

Sorry for this late report. Fished out of The Yacht Club at Palmas del Mar on the east coast of PR in mid November. Had a nice mixed bag of wahoo, Mahi and Blackfin tuna. We also hooked and small blue Marlin. There was a 250 # Sword landed there the week before I arrived. This is my first time in Puerto Rico so I was very happy with the results. We are staying ther for the winter. I am going back the week of 12/13 to try again. |

Fishing has been excellent for us the last couple of month. A lot of MahiMahi, Wahoo,Tunas close to shore in the north side of the island. Season is slowly changing, although most of the fishing was for the meat fish , billfish were caught on every trip . Mostly sailfish and white marlins but somes blues in the hundred pound range were release. We will move to the south (Ponce) for couple of month to follow the blues in front of Guanica Bay. We think is the same migration that swim by the Romana between Feb until May. Little Elo Club Nautico de San Juan |

This report could be from Miami , Florida , but the players mostly from Puerto Rico. Last Monday Sept 29 my friend Arnaldo Goenaga called to talk about a fishing trip for swordfish out of Miami, without hesitation the decision was made, airplane tickets bought and the charter boat Miss Britt booked with captain Alex and mate Jason in charge for the trip. Went out Oct 3 from Coconut Grove Monty's Marina, caught some bait at the yellow buoy east of Key Biscayne and then cruise 20 miles out to the fishing area. Started fishing At 8:00P.M. caught a swordfish ,shark and tuna. Went back to the Marina at about 1:00A.M. just before a bad weather started to settle in over the area. In conclusion, it was alot of fun to fish aboard Miss Britt with a excellent crew who took care of everything. Joe Ramirez Little Elo Club Nautico de San Juan |

Slower than expected for a first quarter week end. Hurricane Ike travelling west ,center located at 285 miles north of Puerto Rico. Anyway went fishing and came out 1 blue marlin /two strikes around 200# plus release. Late Sunday afternoon, returning to port we saw a couple of sailfish (which is not common for this month) in front of San Juan hotels in about 50 fathom, It might be a good sign for that fishery during the winter. The Club Deportivo del Oeste held its annual Light Tackle Blue Marlin Tournament this past October 13-16 and 104 boats registered in the event. In 3 days of fishing 244 blue marlin were released to establish a new world record for a blue marlin tournament held on 30 pound line. Of the 244 blues, 205 were tagged/photographed with digital cameras/and released while 39 were released with no tags or pictures. The 61 foot Spencer "Mojito" with owner Jose Valdes Jr. and Captains Israel Ruiz and Gene Lebron led the way with 9 blues released, 8 of them with tags & pictures. "Mojito" took over the second day of fishing going 7 for 12 reporting 4 double headers to radio control that day. The 50 foot Ronin "Gaviota" owned by Joe Vizcarrondo finished second with seven blues released (5 tagged/2 no tags) all caught the first day of fishing. The 31 foot Bertram "Mareja" with Capt. Mickey Amador at the helm tagged 6 fish, 4 for 7 the last day of fishing, to place third. Sebastian Carrera of "Mareja" was the best angler overall with 4 tagged blue marlin. The event saw 92 blues released the first day, 84 the second and 68 the last day of fishing. Two whites and 3 sails were also released but did not count for points in the blue marlin only tournament. Well the 52nd edition of the Club Nautico de San Juan is over and 88 vessels tag & released 103 blue marlin this year. The fishing was good the first day with 35 releases, then slacked off a little bit the next days with 22, 24 and 22 blues released. The winning boat was "LASIK", a 60ft Bertram, that tag & released 5 blues for 2500 points. Second place went to the "LADY LOU", a 66ft Spencer also with 5 blues, but only 3 of them tagged for 2300 points. Third place went to "HY POT" with 3 blues tagged for 1500 points, fourth went to "LA VUELTA" with 1500 points and fifth went to "OSIMAR" also with 1500 points. Calm seas were the norm throughout the event and the bite was really scattered out all along the north coast. "LADY LOU" won the overall calcutta making Capt. Puchy Sanabria a very happy camper. The Cangrejos Yacht Club celebrated its annual blue marlin tournament from August 18th to the 21st and drew a total of 69 participating vessels. I fished aboard Alfredo Gonzalez' 25 foot Contender "Roxy" and we were lucky enough to win the event with 3 blue marlin photographed, tagged and released. What's amazing is that we caught all 3 on the first day of fishing, including a fat 500 pounder that took me 3 hours to land on 50 lb. stand-up gear. The 61ft Buddy Davis "Eileen" also tagged 3 but finished second based on time of catch. A 37ft Egg Harbor named "Cristy" finished third with two blues tagged and released. The first day of fishing was good with 27 releases, but a tropical wave pushing through the local area screwed up the fishing the last two days as only 21 were tallied for a 3 day total of 48 blues tagged and released. The Club Nautico de San Juan celebrates the 52nd edition of the International Billfish Tournament September 10-17 so lets see how that one goes... Tight lines, Juanca. |

Well the moon has gone down and the bite has slowed a bit, but there are still some blue marlin to be found out there. The bite in the San Juan area was awesome (as it has been for the May, June and July moons) and the forecast for the peak months of August and September looks very promising. Last time I fished was the day of the full moon aboard "La Pana" and we released 3 blues in the 100 to 150 pound range. The next day "La Pana" was at it again and went 2 for 3, including a nice one of around 400 pounds. Last weekend the town of Dorado had its blue marlin tournament with the moon on its backside and they still caught some fish. The winning boat, a 45ft Cabo named "Luisa", caught a 320 pounder and released another one. The 54ft Bertram "Big Deal" hooked a nice fish at 2:00 pm. on Suanday and lost it at 9:00 pm. when the sharks moved in... Mayaguez is heating up also with the few boats fishing seeing 4 to 5 a day. I'll be fishing the Mona Passage and "Pichincho" this weekend so let's see what happens. Tight lines, Juanca. |

Great blue marlin bite in the north coast of Puerto Rico. Nice blue water was found close the to 100 fathom line which is just 1 to 2 miles offshore of the island and a lot bait was present there along with some nice weedlines. Aboard the 31 ft Bertram "La Pana" we were 0 for 3 on friday and 2 for 3 on saturday and aboard the 40 ft Cabo "Wheezing" we were 1 for 3 on sunday. I fished in front of the airport all three days and on saturday most of the boats there had three bites apiece. "Marisol" was 1 for 3, "Wheezing" was 1 for 3, "Malas Notas" was 0 for 3 and "Espetao" was 2 for 3. All of the fish we saw were in the 100 to 200 pound range, but there were some bigger ones reported raised by other boats in the area. Down the coast in the port of Arecibo a local tournament saw 62 boats register in the event which produced 28 blue marlin releases and 2 brought to the scales in two days of fishing. The winning fish was 355 pounder caught by the crew of the "Kimi" and top boat was "Extreme Games" with 5 blue marlin releases, 4 of which were tagged on the first day of fishing. The strong bite should continue all throughout this week and into next weekend. Tight lines, Juanca. |

The past ten days have produced an awesome blue marlin bite in the north coast of Puerto Rico. From June 16th to June 26th the bite has been close to shore, from the dropoff out to about 4 miles. There have been plenty of schools of skipjack and yellowfin tuna around in good supply, and even a few big dorado have been caught on the windier days. One of the tuna schools yielded a 155 pound Yellowfin for a small boat in Dorado. This is just a sampling of some of the boats that did well on the blues during that stretch: Saturday June 18th - In San Juan the 45ft Hatteras "Mar Caribe" went 2 for 4, tagging one and boating a 104 inch fish that came up DOA. The 31ft Bertram "Osimar" was 1 for 2 and they also had one that got tailwrapped and measured out at 108 inches. The 45ft Hatteras "Brava" released a 380 pounder out of 2 bites and the "Jean B" released a 350 pounder. At Cangrejos Yacht Club (near the airport)the 31ft Bertram "Alexandra" caught a 556 pounder and was back at the dock at 10:00 am. The 26ft Regulator "Marlin Grander" caught another nice one at 519 pounds. Aboard the 31ft "La Pana" we went 1 for 3, tagging a 150 pounder. Many boats today had 2 to 3 bites. Tuesday June 21st - In Cangrejos "La Pana" was 1 for 4, weighing in a 507 pounder. Saturday June 25th - In Cangrejos "La Pana" was 1 for 3 releasing a 180 pounder. In San Juan "Le Lo Lai" was 1 for 2, "Pescadora" was 1 for 2, and "Amigo" was 1 for 3 tagging a 350 pounder. Sunday June 26th - I was aboard "La Pana" and we went 2 for 3, tagging 250 & 300 pounders. The 31ft Bertram "Sonrisa" tagged a nice 500 pounder after a two hour fight. "Kimi" was 0 for 3 losing a nice one that almost dumped an 80 wide. "Amigo" in San Juan went 1 for 5 and both "Sea Born" and "Mar Caribe" tagged small blues. * I would like to point out that the fish that are weighed here in PR all are dressed out and consumed by the families of the anglers that catch them. Usually one blue marlin a season more than fills up an anglers freezer. We should see a lot more of the big girls released in the upcomming months... Until the next report, tight lines - Juanca. |

The Ponce Yacht & Fishing Club held its annual Blue Marlin tournament from May 27-29 and had 37 vessels register in the event. In the end 7 blue marlin were tagged and released while two blues were brought back to the scales. The 54ft Bertram "Lady Anne" caught the largest fish of the tournament, a nice 538 pounder on 50 pound test line. The 65ft Hatteras "Sea Wish" caught the other blue, another nice one at 509 pounds also on 50 pound. The top boat was the 45ft Cabo Express "Luisa" which tagged and released two blue marlin. While the bite was slow at least the big ladies made the event shine. The total opposite was taking place in the north coast with a strong blue marlin bite. Caito Melo's 31ft Bertram "La Pana" had a great day friday May 27th going 4 for 7 seven on the blues. He almost caught number 5 but had one his anglers backlash a nice one... He went back at it on saturday the 28th and released a blue and a white out of 3 bites. Juan Carlos Puig 25ft Contender also released 2 blues out of 3 bites, and Ray Suarez "Nany" also released two blues. In the west coast the 35ft Cabo "Liquid Asset" went at on June 4th and caught a nice 627 pounder near the dropoff on bouy #6. They fought the fish deep for many hours and it came to boatside DOA. Summer action is heating up and everybody is ready for the June moon. Tight lines, Juanca. |

The first blue marlin tournament of the season was held at the Club Nautico de La Parguera in the south coast of Puerto Rico May 20-22. A total of 33 boats registered in the two day event. 10 blue marlin, 2 white marlin and 1 sailfish were tagged while one nice fish was brought back to the barn. The 430 pound blue was caught by Pedro Quintero aboard Santiago Domench's "Erik" and it gave Pedro the biggest blue marlin and best fisherman awards. "Erik" also nailed down the best boat award. Fernando Talero's "Relief" tagged and released two blues on sunday to end up as the second best boat. Frankie Mirandes' "Tormenta" nailed third place by tagging the first blue of the event. Seas were unusualy calm and the fish were scarce, however the average size of the blues was larger this year. Many of the boats that tagged fish estimated the weights between 250 and 300 pounds. Two big fish were lost at boatside after lengthy battles so the big ones were definitely around. Next week the Ponce Yacht and Fishing Club has its tournament. Will the smaller male marlin arrive for the show to rack up some good numbers? Stay tuned... Tight lines, Juanca. |

What's going on in Puerto Rico? Seas have been unusually calm for this time of the year but luckily there's always something to fish for around here. Cangrejos Yacht Club celebrated its annual tarpon tournament and 38 boats competed in the event. I fished aboard Harold Vicente's cool 20 foot Twin Vee Cat "Flying Jig" along with Ricky Castro and Carlos Roberto Gonzalez. We managed to release 4 tarpon and 1 snook during to place 2nd in the boat division with 174 points. "Tight Loop" captained by Nico Guzman took the boat category with 4 tarpon releases for 178 points. The largest tarpon of the event was caught by Carlos Roberto aboard the "Flying Jig" and it measured out at 63 inches (LJFT). According to the length/girth formula it was about 96 pounds. That catch awarded Carlos Roberto a trip to the Rolex Inshore Championship. The second largest tarpon was a 62 inch fish caught aboard "Tight Loop" by George Martinez and the third place fish was a 57 inch tarpon caught by Jorge Guzman aboard "Piper". All fish were released and the lengths were verified with digital pictures and official tournament tape measures. On the other side of the island, The Club Nautico de La Parguera held its annual Dorado (dolphin) tournament and 48 boats registered in the event. In the end the 48 ft Cabo "Relief" with Richie Matos at the helm caught 26 dorado for a total weight of 460 pounds for the win. The largest dorado caught in the event weighed 53, 50 and 49 pounds respectively. Several blue marlin were also released during the event and there was even a triple-header of blues reported aboard the "Karpierre". They managed to tag two of the three fish. This weekend the Ponce Yacht Club celebrates its Light Tackle tournament (20 pound line) and I'll be there to check it out. Tight lines, Juanca. |

It's been a long time since my last report but has fishing has remianed very good in Puerto Rico. The southern coast, mainly the ports of Ponce and La Parguera, has seen a great billfish bite recently. The crew aboard Hector Sanchez'"Inesmar" went 2/3 on blue marlin on 3/10 and the crew aboard Mickey Amador's "Mareja" went 2/5 on blue marlin also. Most of the fish were in the 100 to 200 pound range, but the "Inesmar" did jump off a 300 pounder. The southern coast of Vieques has seen an increase in billfish activity as well as an increase in boats fishing these waters since the Navy moved out of the area. I fished Vieques on 2/25 and we released a small blue marlin and a sailfish, and added 14 dorado to our fishbox. The seas were calm and the water was a deep blue close to shore. Gonzalo Ferrer's "Blackjack" has also released a couple of nice sized sails the past couple of trips to Vieques. As soon as the wind starts to howl those big dorado will provide some great action all over the southern coast. Capt. Marcos Hanke in Fajardo has also taken advantage of the calm seas and has done very well live chummimg on some of the outer reefs in 100 to 140 feet of water. I joined him on 3/12 and we had a great day catching kingfish, cero mackerel, barracuda, yellowtail snapper, cabrilla grouper, rainbow runner, little tunny and almaco jacks. We capped off the day running to the dropoff and catching six yellowfin and 1 blackfin tuna on live bait. It was really cool watching the yellowfins bust on the chum close to the boat. Most were footballs in the 15 to 25 pound range, although we did manage a nice 40 pounder. I'll keep reporting as they keep on biting. Tight lines, Juanca. |

Well its been pretty good all around fishing here in Puerto Rico. The billfish bite is still going on on the north coast as sailfish and white marlin have been showing up in good numbers, with a few blues mixed in to make things interesting. Capt. Marcos Hanke caught a double header of small blues on 20 pound test on saturday proving that point. He also points out that the reef fishing for blackfin tuna, kingfish, mutton snapper and cabrilla grouper has been very good. The dorado run which peaked out in December and January is slowing down, although bigger fish will show until the end of May. In the south coast there hasn't been enough of a breeze for the dolphin run to materialize but the swordfish bite has been very good. About a month ago Luis Oliver aboard the "Patrimar" caught a 474 pound beast after a 3 hour battle in Ponce. That's the biggest sword ever weighed in in Puerto Rico. Hats of to "Pichi" and "Yuyin" for a great catch with a two man crew. I tried my luck in Ponce aboard Rafa Castro's "Hy Pot" on saturday and caught my first sword, a fat 180 pounder on 50 pound test. Thanks to the crew of the "Hy Pot" for a great experience. We also caught a nice thresher shark during the day. It is truely incredible how hard a sword can pull. The battle lasted two hours. A special thanks for a great wiring job by Ricky and great gaffs by "el viejito" and Harold. I'll keep reporting in the near future. Tight lines, Juanca. |

Weather has been a problem the last couple of weeks and time on the water has been rare for most of the boats around Puerto Rico's north shore. Big cold fronts have consistently swept through the area creating heavy seas, big ground swells and steady 25 to 30 knot winds. Most of the north coast inlets have been closed with the swellswith the exception of San Juan Harbor. Those that have braved the conditions have found huge quantities of dorado in the massive weedlines found offshore. On January 6th "La Pana" caught 85 dorado with a two man crew, then called the "Hook-up" to the area and they caught 107 dorado. That's 192 dorado between 2 boats! "La Pana" braved it out again on January 10th and caught 27 dorado and 9 wahoo. We are hoping that the weather settles just a little bit so that we can fish the January moon for some small blues, whites and sails. In the south coast some swordfish have been caught deep dropping during the day and some large dorado have also hit the scales. They (dorado) will become more consistent catches once the trade winds blow in the southern coast steadily for a few days. The weather has been pretty calm lately and that's not good for dolphin fishing there. Some good numbers of blue marlin and even a sailfish or two have been also crashing the spreads of the dolphin fishermen. Tight lines, Juanca. |

Captain Eduardo Alcaide and the crew of the 50 foot Hatteras "Big Time" had a great Christmas present this past friday, December 10th. They set off on a half-day charter fishing trip out of Fajardo on the East end of the island and set out their baits near the dropoff. Soon after Captain Alcaide found a school of Blackfin tuna and started working his spread around them. At this time of the year he usually runs a spread of three 50's and a lonely 130 right behind the teasers. Luckily for them that's the one that got bit. A big blue marlin engulfed the lure and the fight was on. An hour and a half later the big blue was pulled through the transom door and taken to the barn. Unfortunately no scales were present at the Conquistador resort marina so Capt. Alcaide had to wait until saturday morning to weigh his catch. The big fish weighed in at 814 pounds over 12 hours after they caught it. The short measurement was 132 inches and the pectoral girth was 66 inches. However, the anal girth had a whoppping 70 inches! Congratulations to the crew of the "Big Time" for a great catch. Dorado have been everywhere and along with a good showing of blackfins and yellowfins there are definitely still some big blues around. Tight lines, Juanca. |

Thanks to Guili for that note. My wife Sarita and baby JC are doing just fine. I don't think I've ever been so awake at night, not even on a swordfishing trip!!! Fishing has been hot during the past weeks and these are the highlights of what's happened: Saturday December 4th Capt. Miguel Tirado and owner Tony Sanchez and crew of the Hatteras "A Huyir" had a great day raising 9 billfish to their spread. They ended up releasing 4 sails, a white and a spearfish for a grand slam! Hats off to them on a great day. The crew aboard "Roxy" raised 5 billfish to their spread, releasing 2 sails and catching 3 nice dorado. "M & M" was 1 for 4 on billfish releasing a white and "Quick Release" also released a whitey. Billfish action was very good throughout the north coast from Arecibo to Fajardo. The "Grand Illusion" fishing in Fajardo had a 500 pound blue eat a small dolphin they were winding in! Unfortunately the big blue took the dolphin leaving the crew sahiking their heads. The "Alana" fishing Fajardo waters headed farther offshore and found a nice weedline that produced 36 dolphin and 2 wahoo. They also lost a sail during the day. I don't know when I'll see the deep blue water again but when I do I'll let you know... Tight lines, Juanca. |

Fishing this past weekend was pretty fair on the north coast of Puerto Rico. Blue marlin and sailfish showed up as well as some dolphin, wahoo and Yellowfin tuna. Boats fishing out of San Juan reported having a mixed bag of dorado and wahoo, and they reported several billfish releases as well. The "Grand Illusion" caught 36 dorado and raised 2 sails for a great day on the water on 11/05. I fished aboard "Roxy" once again on 11/06 and we released a nice blue marlin of about 125 pounds on 20 pound line, caught 11 dorado and a 35 pound Yellowfin tuna. Great thing was we never went over 6 miles offshore! We also missed a couple of shots at a small sailfish. "Reel Affair" and "Blackjack" both released sails and caught some dorado. The "Bachata" down in Arecibo had a great day also on 11/06 going 2 for 3 on blue marlin, 1 for 2 on sailfish and taking 6 dorado to the barn. The "Alana" up by Fajardo was 1 for 3 on sailfish and also caught 7 dorado. The sails are moving in and we are expecting a big cold front that will mix with another system from the Caribbean Sea to switch them into high gear by next week. I'll keep you guys informed... Great weather and great fishing in Puerto Rico's north coast. The fall run of billfish is starting up from Aguadilla to Fajardo and big balls of bait have been present inshore and near the dropoffs. Some of the boats fishing the Puerto del Rey Rodeo in Fajardo found the bait schools in 300 feet of water between the counties of Loiza and Luquillo and the billfish were there. The winning boat "Ana Isabel" released two whites and a sail out of 7 bites, while "Evemar" released 2 whites out of 8 shots for second place. Third place went to team "Contender" with 2 sails released out of 6 shots. Many of the boats fishing this tournament had never blue water fished before and the fleet wiffed a whole lot of bites during the two days of fishing. In San Juan "Pescadora" was 1 for 2 on blues and 0 for 1 on sails and "Tijereta" released a white and a sail. I fished aboard a 25ft Contender and we released a small blue on 20 pound line. Also caught 3 nice blackfins for dinner. The bait balls were very close to shore last saturday as blackfins and little tunny were feeding in 50 to 100 feet of water. Fishing has been steady through the week as boats have been seeing a mix of blues, whites and sails. "Marlin Magic" fished tuesday and raised 2 whites and 1 blue, releasing one of the whites. They also got 4 big dorado. Yesterday "Alana" in Fajardo released a small blue marlin and caught 6 nice yellowfins up to 60 pounds. Went out for a afternoon trip and raised a white and a sail and we got two nice sancochoes! I'll be out again on saturday so I'll let you know if anything interesting happens. Tight lines, Juanca. |

The Club Nautico de Mayaguez held its "Locos Adams" blue marlin tournament in Mayaguez last weekend from October 15-17. 25 boats fished the event and tagged and released 22 blues, 1 white and 1 sail. One blue marlin was boated and it was a nice one on 50 pound line weighing 446 pounds. The numebers really do not reflect the quality of the fishing during the event. The boats that did find the fish had some good action. The "Lucy Vi" was 2 for 5 on saturday and 3 for 5 on sunday and even though they had one fish disqualified because the photo didn't show the tag clearly, they still finished in second place. The "Sea Witch was the top boat also with 4 blues released. Hector Sanchez aboard "Mareaito" caught the 446 pounder on sunday and added to their two releases on saturday secured third place for them. The big news of the tournament came from the 25 ft Contender "Fuakata" who tagged, photographed and released a Grand Slam on sunday. They got the blue early, caught the sail at mid day and then got the whitey in the afternoon fishing west of Desecheo Island. Hats off to their crew! In the north coast sailfish have began to show up. Paco Vela and Rafo Caicedo released two sails in Vega Baja on saturday and caught two big dorado on sunday. Jorge Torruella's "Gin Pole" released two blue marlin on saturday and Mike Benitez'"Sea Born" caught one on sunday and one monday (yesterday). The tuna fishing is still hot right in front of San Juan harbor. I fished aboard the "Roxy", a 25ft Contender, and caught 6 Yellowfin in the 40 to 65 pound class. They were a lot of fun on 20 pound spin sailfish tackle! We also caught 6 blackfins as well. First quarter of the moon is tomorow and the last good blue marlin bite should be in full force for the next ten days or so. I'll be out saturday again so I'll let you know. Tight lines, Juanca. |

The Club Nautico de Boqueron held its annual blue marlin tournament in the west coast of the island October 1-3. 60 boats released 39 blue marlin in two days of fishing. The winning boat "Stephanie" released three blues the first day and won the event based on time of catch. "Hole in One" also released three blues, two the first day and one the second, for second place. They hooked the fourth blue for the win just before lines out on the last day but it was a nice one and it went deep. After a while they had to decide if they wanted to run in with the picture of the third fish for second place or fight the fish out and risk not making it to the dock on time and not placing at all. Eventually they broke the fish off and settled for second place. "Be Happy" finished in third place with two released blues. It has been tuna mania in the north coast for the last couple of weeks. Big balls of bait have settled close to shore from the Radars all the way up to the airport and Yellowfin, Blackfin, Skipjacks and Little Tunnies have been slaying the bait balls. If these bait balls linger into the end of the month I'm sure the sailfish will surely move in. Yellowfins in the 30 to 60 pound have been the average although there are plenty of brutes in the 70 to 100 pound range also. The blackfins have been thick and those with light spinning tackle and even fly rods have been having a good old time. We will be trying to catch a nice Yellowfin on the fly so I'll let you know how that turns out. Tight lines, Juanca. |

The west coast of Puerto Rico has been on fire the past few weeks! Small blue marlin (and even a couple of nice ones) have been on the prowl in the waters of the Mona Passage. The ESPN Extreme series hit Mayaguez from September 18-21 and had some "extreme" fishing. Six boats caught & released 36 blue marlin in 3 days of fishing on 30 pound test line. The winning boat "Waterproof" tag & released 12 fish to take the event. "Sharky's Revenge" was second with 8 blues while "Lucy Vi" was third with 5 blues. The kicker here was that at the end of the tournament "Freedom" and "Waterproof" were tied in the final standings of the 5 event series. So they had a fish off on September 22 and "Waterproof" went 3 for 3 and won a cool $300,000 for the week! Congratulations for Capt. Mario and crew on a hot 4 days of fishing. Thanks to Dave and Tami Nolling for taking me along to fish along with Ritchie, Alberto and Jeremiah. Alberto caught 4 blues while I caught the last one aboard "Lucy Vi" to play the role of the "spoiler". I heard rumors that the ESPN folks are not considering Mayaguez for next season and if that is for real the organizers should all be medically examined. Not only was it the best fishing of all 5 legs but people around Mayaguez go all out to cater to the visiting boats. We will just have to see what happens... The Club Deportivo del Oeste was up next from September 23-26 and 99 boats registered for the event. After three good days of fishing 175 blue marlin were released in the tournament using 30 pound test line. The winning boat was "Libertad" and Capt. Paco Vela with 6 blues tagged & released. "Espetao" was second with four blues and "Pawingo" was third also with 4 blues. I fished aboard "Principito" and we released 4 blues out of 7 good bites. This week Boqueron has its anual tournament and the bite should still be pretty good. I'll keep reporting as they keep bitting. Tight lines, Juanca. |

Sorry for the long wait between reports but I was on vacation and on the water most of the time. Anyways the 51st IBT of Club Nautico de San Juan was a little slow this year with 78 boats releasing 75 blue marlin. The winning boat was the "Siouxsie Anne" from the west coast of the island and they released 4 blues. Aboard the 45 ft Cabo "Implante" we tag & released 3 blues and almost pulled off the back to back but settled for second place when "Siouxsie Anne" tagged their fourth fish on the final day. The boats "Reflejos", "Davis 61" and "Rum Bum" finished in third, fourth and fifth places respectively. In the Cangrejos Yacht Club tournament 90 boats tag & released 76 blue marlin in 3 days of fishing. For the first time in the event's history no qualifying blue marlin were boated (it was a 105 inch minimum). The winning boat "Don Felix" tag & released six blues, while "Barbie" had 4 blues and "kimi" had 3. The Club Deportivo del Oeste has its annual Light Tackle Blue Marlin tournament at the end of the month in Mayaguez and we're hopping for a repeat of last years 178 releases on 30 pound test line. I'll be there so I'll let you know the results. Tight lines, Juanca. |

The Club Nautico de Arecibo held its annual blue marlin tournament July 30 - August 1 and saw 69 boats capture 41 blue marlin, 38 releases and 3 fish in the boat. Saturday "Paolo" weighed in a 366 pounder and "Palagua" weighed a 341. Sunday the only fish boated was a 426 pounder for "Karen". "Osimar" was top release boat with 3 tags in the two days, and they could have been the winners when they pulled off a gaff fish on the wire. "Paolo" was the top boat for the event with the 366 and another release (there were bonus points for fish in the boat). There was a pretty fair bite in front of the Radars but the water was a little murky in the usual fishing grounds. Clean blue water was 10 miles out and the winning boats caught their fish out there, even though a lot of fish were caught in the murky stuff 5 to 10 miles offshore. The "Libertad" fought a nice one on 50 pound tackle for over 4 hours and lost it near the boat to a pulled hook. Capt. Puchy Sanabria reported raising three blues to his spread and had a sure tournament winner window shop for a while but didn't get a bite out of her. He said she was in the 700 pound class. This week the big girls should start to show with the moon starting to go down. Tight lines, Juanca. |

The blue marlin bite has been fair recently but it has not been as hot as the last moon. A combination of high presure systems and sporadic rainy days have helped to slow things up a bit. Anyways some nice fish were boated during the dark of the moon, including a 635 and a 590 at Club Nautico de San Juan. The first quarter of this moon has seen some bites, but as I said before not nearly as good as last month. I fished two full days and two half days with Miguel Casul aboard his 36ft Riviera "Alana" and at least got bit once every day. First day we were 0/1, second day 0/2 missing two great pitch bait bites, third day 0/1, and finally 1/1 tagging about a 325 pounder. I haven't heard of anybody yet this moon seeing 3 or 4 fish a day like last moon. Maybe it will happen this weekend with the full moon and the nice weather that is forcasted. I'll report any good fishing I hear down this way. Tight lines, Juanca. |

The blue marlin action continued during the full moon weekend in San Juan. "Paolo" fished four days straight from July 2 - 5 and was 0/3 on friday, 1/3 on saturday, 1/4 on sunday and 1/1 on monday. "Libertad" was 1/3 on saturday and 0/3 on monday, including a big one that spooled an 80 pound outfit. "Amigo" was 1/5 and "Fishing Legend" was 1/3 on saturday also. I fished aboard "La Pana" and we were 1/1 releasing a 180 pounder. Reports have also been hot from St. Thomas as Mike Lemmon and the crew of the "Revenge" have been tearing it up as usual. They have been averaging 2 to 3 blues released per day. The Puerto Rican boat "Le Lo Lai" fished the north drop July 3 & 4 and were 0/6 the first day and 3/3 the second day. I also got reports from the blue marlin tournament held in Cabeza de Toro (Dominican Republic) which was won by the "Grace" with a 621 pound fish. The "Cacata" had a great second day of the tournament going 4 for 9. Everybody is getting ready for the next moon at the end of the month and the action should be very hot. Tight lines, Juanca. |

Well the blue marlin have come in force this year and it seems like it's going to be a great season. This past weekend with the rising moon saw a flurry of hot action in both San Juan and Arecibo. Saturday, June 26th, was particularly good. The "Paolo" was the top boat for the day going 3 for 7. They raised seven, had five takers, and released three. The "Kiana" was 1 for 2 and boated a nice 455 pounder. Another boat from Dorado also boated a 410 pounder. Other boats in the action were "Grand Illusion" 1 for 5, "Sea Born" 1 for 3 (this was a nice one estimated at 500 pounds), "Anamarina" 0 for 4, "Idabe" 2 for 2 and "Fishing Legend" 0 for 3. In Arecibo the "Aldy" was 1 for 5 and another boat was 2 for 4. Sunday, June 27th, the vessels "Gin Pole", "Contender 25" and "Kimi" all releasd two blues apiece. Yesterday the "Sea Born" was 2 for 3, "La Pana" was 0 for 2 and the "Paolo" was 0 for 3. I heard reports of a big one caught in the Vega Baja area that measured out at 122 inches (LYFL) but have not received the exact weight. Full moon is friday and the bite continues... Tight lines, Juanca. |

Sorry for the long delay between reports, but only a couple of tournaments have taken place since then and the May moon bite was not that hot. Anyways, the Club Nautico de La Parguera held its yearly event and saw 36 boats release 19 blues and 2 whites. Only one fish was brought back to the barn but it was a nice one of 603 pounds. The top boat "Lazy Eye" released 3 blues during the two days of fishing. After them four boats were tied with two releases apiece. The really big news came from a boat fishing the day before the tournament that brought in a nice 250 pound swordfish to the scales right in the middle of registration of the teams. Needless to say that got everybody excited. Another two swords were caught after that one so there's definitely some more investigating to do around here. In the Dominican Republic there was a blue marlin tournament held at Punta Cana from June 3-6 and the winning fish weighed 451 pounds caught aboard the puerto rican boat "Josefina". The second place fish weighed in at 381 pounds caught aboard "Cary" and the third place fish weighed 315 pounds caught aboard the "Dream Catcher". Sad news is that a lot of fish were killed that were undersized (the minimum was 300) that ranged between 250 and 280 pounds, including one that was fought on the last day for 5 hours on 80 pound line and was estimated to the tournament comitee boat at 450 pounds. At the scales it later weighed in at 274 pounds.Go figure that one... In San Juan there was an all ladies tournament held June 5 & 6 and the winning boat "El Pillo" weighed in a 340 pounder and released another one to take the victory. There were reports of a very big fish that left a sad lady with no line on her 80 pound reel. The first day of the Dominican Republic White Marlin Open saw about 19 fish released among 30 boats. The bite was very slow. "Four C Sons", "Dream Catcher" and a local Dominican boat had three releases apiece. I'll keep reporting as the summer bite heats up. Tight lines, Juanca. |

Well the first blue marlin tournament of the season is over and blue marlin fever is in full swing here in Puerto Rico. The Ponce Yacht & Fishing Club held the first event May 1 and 2 and had 45 particpating boats. Unfortunately a wicked High presure system was in the area causing heavy winds and seas, and the bite was a bit off. 13 blues were released in the two days of fishing and none were brought to the scales. The "Zaida" from Ponce won the event by releasing 2 blues. In San Juan Capt. Puchy Sanabria aboard his "Grand Illusion" released several blues in the 250 to 300 pound class last week and a 475 pounder was weighed in at Cangrejos Yacht Club last sunday. I fished last weekend in Fajardo looking for those white marlin and released one in the 50 pound range and caught 11 nice dorado 20 to 30 pounds apiece. I'll be on the water for the next tournament in La Parguera so I'll let you know. Tight Lines, Juanca. |

Just a couple of lines to tell you about my last trip aboard Gonzalo Ferrer's 32ft Regulator "Blackjack". We headed out from Fajardo off the eastern end of Puerto Rico and were looking for blue marlin or maybe even some big dorado. We had stand-up 30 & 50 pound rigs and fished some small mackerel and ballyhoo. Ten minutes after setting up the spread we had a blind strike on the right long and I dropped back the big horse ballyhoo. I locked up and the fish was not there. As I brought the whole bait back to the boat the leader was a bit frayed. Humm... Half an hour later they same scene was replayed on Gonzalo's rod. We downsized our ballyhoo with lighter leaders and left one mackerel for the blues on the left long. Of course a big white marlin found the mackerel to its liking but we switched him off to one of the smaller baits. I dropped back and got a solid hook-up. Twenty five minutes later we photographed and released one of the biggest whites I have seen in ages. We estimated its weight at 100 pounds. We set up again and another whitey was after the mack! We switched again and hooked this one also. After four nice jumps unfortunately this one pulled off. He was another nice one, maybe 60 to 70 pounds. Since this is not sailfish season we gather the first two strikes were also whites. We ended up 1 for 4 after fishing only 4 and a half hours. Is this the start of some good white marlin fishing? I'll let you know as we will probe these waters for the next few months. Tight lines, Juanca. |

Well after a rough February and first half of March things are better around the island again. The southern coast has kicked off its marlin and dolphin season in full swing with two dorado tournaments in the last two weekends. The Ponce Yacht & Fishing Club saw 31 boats fish the one day event on March 20 and they caught a total of 142 dorado. Several blue marlin and a spearfish were released also in the mix. This is with hardly any trolling time as boats cruise all day at fast speeds to find the abundant frigate birds which carry all those big dolphin. The winning boat "Lazy-Eye" caught 17 dorados for a total of 410 pounds. The biggest fish weighed in at 52 pounds. I fished aboard Rafa Castro's "Hy-pot" and we caught 16 nice ones for a total of 338 pounds and third place overall. Last weekend the Club Nautico de La Parguera had its dolphin tournament March 27 & 28. Fifty boats fished the two day event and caught 323 dorados. The winning boat "Marullito" caught 18 dorados for a total of 470 pounds. The largest dorado were 62 pounds, 52 pounds and 46 pounds. Many blue marlin were reported as well as one sailfish. I fished aboard Hector Sanchez' "Inesmar" on sunday and we had 3 blue marlin bites and managed to release one on 30 pound line. All of the fish were in the 125 to 200 pound range. Ponce has its marlin tournament in the end of April and Parguera has its marlin event in the end of May so I'll keep you guys posted. Tight lines, Juanca. |

Fishing has remained excellent in the north coast of Puerto Rico througout the first month of the year. Small billfish have been on the attack, specially this past weekend. Capt. Puchy Sanabria of the charter boat "Grand Illusion" had a great day Sunday Jan. 25th. Puchy started his first half day trip by raising a double-header of sails that didn't bite. He later released a 100 pound blue on 20 pound line and as soon as the baits hit the water again three sails showed up. Unfortunately all three sails "sancochoed" the anglers. Puchy returned to port, got his next charter party and went back out. The sails must have been waiting for him because as he let the third line of the spread out another triple-header of sails showed up. This time his anglers managed one sailfish release. Later in the afternoon Puchy capped off the trip with 2 nice tuna and three big dorado. The "Sea Born" with Capt. Pitain Martinez had a double-header of whites and released one, while Bruno Rofriguez' "Amigo" released a small blue marlin and lost a sail. Luis Regis' "Marlin Magic" also raised 3 sails and 1 blue to their spread, but missed all four. Eduardo Gonzalez' "Marullito" raised 5 sails and released 1. Most of the billfish action was concentrated 2 to 5 miles fro shore. In the southern coast port of Ponce swordfish are still the #1 attraction as three more were weighed in this past weekend. The biggest was 165 pounds minus the tail, which was eaten off by a Tiger shark at boatside. Reef fishing has been excellent off Fajardo with sailfish, amberjack, blackfin tuna, dolphin and kingfish all eating live baits behind Capt. Marcos Hanke's "Light Tackle Paradise" cat. I joined him for an afternoon trip last week and we caught 7 blackfins, 1 amberjack, 1 dolphin and 3 kings. This weekend the moon is rising so they pointy ones should be bitting. Tight lines, Juanca. |

After rough weather throughout the Christmas season, the seas finally calmed down this past weekend. As usual, the weekend crowd steamed way offshore searching for weedlines and dorado, but those who stayed closer to shore found some good billfish action. On friday, January 9th, the 65ft Hatteras "Four-C-Sons" found a nice current edge and raised 7 sailfish to their spread and released three of them. On sunday, January 11th, Capt. Puchy sanabria aboard his 32ft Topaz "Grand Illusion" raised 4 sails to his spread and released 3. Puchy released a single early in the morning and then released 2 out of a triple-header. Other boats working close to shore also raised many sailfish, specially 2 to 5 miles offshore. The 46ft Bertram "Sals" also released two small blue marlin on sunday. As I had mentioned before, a swordfish was caught in the southern port of Ponce and it weighed out at 103 pounds. Since then another sword was caught by the "Al Fin" again in Ponce waters and this weighed in at 80 pounds. Both swords were caught by drifting baits during the day "Venezuelan style" at the same spot. Needless to say more anglers are getting ready to try their luck with the swords so I'll keep you posted as this fishery develops. By the way, all three rod & reel caught swords have come from the southern coast of Puerto Rico. Tight lines, Juanca. |

Well the weather has been kind of weird, we even got rains from Tropical storm Odette which oh by the way developed after the so called Hurricane season in December... The seas have been good but Odette and a steady southerly wind sent our blue water nearly to Bermuda and it has been a lousy river green color from the coast up to 30 miles offshore. This same dirty water pretty much killed the December moon bite we were all hoping to get, specially since November had been so good. However, a few sailfish have been raised in the green water and plenty of wahoo and dolphin have been caught offshore. The water color still has not changed as of today, let's hope the east wind that has been blowing for the past 4 days pushes the blue/green color change a lot closer. A heard a report of a rod & reel caught swordfish caught in the southern port of Ponce. Sources say it weighed something like 106 pounds. I'll keep you guys posted on what I can find out. If its true its only the second sword caught on rod & reel off Puerto Rico. Tight lines, Juanca. |

The Dolphin season is approaching full swing on the north coast of Puerto Rico, recent rains left a large quantity of floating debris that is now a few weeks old. Wahoo continue to roam through the area, many of these fish are in the 8 to 20 pound range, the area of the Grappler Bank and the Patillas Bank located off the southeast coast continue to be your best bet for the larger wahoo. Several sailfish, white marlin and the occassional small blue have all been raised to the lure spreads recently. Inshore Tarpon season is heating up,with multiple fish days the standard result.Release for the future!!!! |

Rain, Rain, and more rain... It's been real wet around Puerto Rico for the last week, but that has not slowed down the billfish bite on the north coast. Sailfish and white marlin have shown up on schedule, and a few blue marlin have been caught as well. I fished several days since my last report and here's how we've done: Went out with Capt. Puchy Sanabria aboard "Anamarina" half day (fished from 2:00 - 5:15 pm.) and raised 4 sails and 1 white, released 2 sails and the whitey. Went out half day (fished from 1:30 - 5:30 pm.) with Gonzalo Ferrer aboard "Blackjack" and raised a sailfish triple-header and managed to release one. Went out yesterday on a full day trip from Fajardo aboard Israel Rivera's "La Valentina" and raised 3 sailfish, released 2 of them. Also caught a couple of wahoo and had many other cut-offs. "Fulladosa" in San Juan raised 8 sailfish, but managed only one release. Capt. Eduardo Alcaide also in Fajardo raised a triple-header of white marlin and released two. However, the big news this week came from Alex Lluch and Victor Reyes fishing aboard a 36ft Riviera in Fajardo. On friday 11/07 they released a blue marlin, a double-header of white marlin, and a spearfish for the GRAND SLAM. They also caught some dorado and wahoo to cap off a great day. Congratulations to Alex and "Vitito" on their day. As they keep on bitting I'll keep reporting. Tight lines, Juanca. |

November is a mixed bag of billfish in the North coast of Puerto Rico from Fajardo all the way to Aguadilla. Small blue marlin, white marlin, sailfish and spearfish all make a good showing during the winter months. I fished last weekend aboard Gonzalo Ferrer's 32ft Regulator "Blackjack" and we raised 2 blues and a white to our spread. The first blue only window shopped, we tagged a 60 pound whitey on 20# and we sancochoed the last blue. The next day we saw no billfish (only trolled for 5 hours) but got 3 nice dorado, including a 43 pound bull. Saturday was the best day with many boats reporting billfish bites. The "Bachata" raised 4 blues and 4 whites down the coast in Arecibo, releasing 3 of the whites but loosing all the blues. The "Amigo" raised 5 billfish saturday releasing one white while the "Genesis" raised 2 blues, a white and a sail but couldn't catch any of them. The moon is rising this week and the bite should really be good. Bigger numbers of sails should also start to show before the end of the month. I'll keep you guys posted, Tight lines, Juanca. |

Fishing has been just like the weather, HOT!!! The little port of Rincon on the West Coast of Puerto Rico celebrated its annual blue marlin tournament and had great fishing. 24 boats fishing only two days caught and released 48 blue marlin. Not only that, over 100 strikes were reported to the tournament control! Unfortunately boats were fishing heavy tackle (80 lbs.) and a lot of fish were lost to pulled hooks. Hector and Luisma Sanchez won the event aboard the 33ft Bertram "Inesmar" with 4 fish tagged, including a double-header released on the second day. 5 boats actually tied for first, but "Inesmar" won on time. "Punta Higuera" was second and "Be Happy" was third. "Inesmar" raised 11 blues to their spread on sunday. Holly cow! Other boats reported seeing 5 to 10 fish a day. Fishing remained steady in San Juan (North coast) also with "La Pana" going 1/4, releasing a 300 pounder. "Paolo" was 1/3, "Sea Born" was 2/2, and "Pescadora" was 1/2 releasing a 350 pounder on 50 pound line. I'll be in the west coast for the Club Deportivo del Oeste light tackle tournament October 2-5 so I'll let you guys know. Tight lines, Juanca. |

Well its' prime time for blue marlin here in Puerto Rico and things have been red hot! The Cangrejos Yacht Club tournament (Aug. 7-10) saw 79 boats catch 67 blue marlin, with 2 making the 101 inch minimum length requirements. The winner was caught aboard "Mr. Fisherman" at 348 pounds and the runner-up was caught by "Little Joe" and weighed 311 pounds. A 456 pounder was caught aboard "Mar Caribe" but was disqualified due to some deep gashes on the fishes' back. The crew of the "Paolo" hooked a fish estimated at 700 to 800 pounds and lost it at boatside on the final day of the event. That same sunday that the event ended the "Barbie" who was fun fishing and did not register in the event caught an 811 pounder that was weighed at the Club Nautico de San Juan. Also up the coast near Fajardo on the East end of the island, Harold Vicente released a 700 pounder on 50 pound line stand-up gear from cousin Jose Gonzalez' 25 foot Luhrs "Macarena". Harold fought the fish for 3 hours 40 minutes before releasing it. Great catch! This past weekend the Club Nautico de Arecibo celebrated its annual event and the top fish were as follows: 429 pounds aboard "Alodia", 398 pounds on "Sosua", 378 pounds on "Mahi Mahi" and 377 on "Margaritina". Things are looking good for the 50th Edition of the International Billfish tournament held at the Club Nautico de San Juan September 1-6. Tight lines, Juanca. |

RICHIE |

Well its full moon time in July and that can only mean one thing, blue marlin biting like crazy. Went out twice last week going 1/2 on both days. First day out fished with Alejandro Grillasca aboard the 35ft Bertram "Paolo" and released a small rat of about 100 pounds. That same day "Osimar" was 1/2. We also raised another blue that day that ripped a teaser up real good... Next day fished with Jose Ramon aboard the "Post 50". Released a blue of about 275 pounds and missed another about the same size. Saturday 7/12 was pretty good all around with most boats getting 2 bites. "Grand Illusion", "Miss Mercedes Benz", "Paolo", "Lady Luck", "Sea Born", "El Gordo" & "Post 50" all scored releases this day. On Monday 7/14 "Grand Illusion" and "Mari Laudy" also scored releases. I hear the boats in the North Drop are doing pretty good, with many seeing 4 or 5 a day, with some boats reporting up to 7 bites! Lady Lou won this weekend's July Open rallying on the final day with 4 releases for a total of 6 in the 3 day event. Hats off once again to them. Tight Lines, Juanca. |

Well it's been blowing like a mother, but with the moon rising there have been some bites in very rough seas. It has been blowing 25-30 knots daily for the past 5 days, but the few souls that have braved it out have had some success. Capt. Puchy Sanabria aboard "Grand Illusion" fished the world cup on 7/04 and released a small blue marlin. He fisehd again on 7/05 and released another blue marlin. The Rexach family aboard the 31ft "Osimar" also fished July 4th & 5th. On the 4th they had a monster strike on an 80 and fought the unseen fish for almost two hours in those rough seas. When the leader finally broke the surface they wired the fish which turned out to be a 200 plus pound Yellowfin tuna. However, the fish had other ideas and shot off behind the boat breaking the 400 pound mono leader. Ouch... They fished again on the 5th and were rewarded with the tag and release of a 375 pound blue marlin. I'll be on the water soon so I'll let you guys know. Tight lines, Juanca. |

Made it out once again this weekend aboard the 37ft Southern Cross "La Valentina" fishing from Fajardo on the eastern end of the island. Found a nice school of Yellowfin tuna late in the day and caught 6 up to 50 pounds. Also jumped off a nice white marlin. However, the big news from last weeks fishing came from Capt. Bill Burlesson and the 42ft Bertram "Karolette" fishing the Grappler Bank on the southeast part of the island. Last monday, 6/16, Capt. Bill and crew released 4 blue marlin out of 5 shots, caught 5 nice wahoo and several dolphin and tuna. Hats of them on a banner day. In San Juan the "Osimar" was 1 for 4 on saturday 6/21, releasing a nice fish in the 475-500 pound range. They also missed a double header that had another nice fish in the 400 pound range. Seems the abundance of yellowfin tuna is really bringing in the big fish this year. Boats from Fajardo to Arecibo reported catching a lot of tuna in the 30 to 60 pound range, with some pushing the 100 pound mark. We had not seen tuna fishing like this in many, many years. Tight lines, Juanca. |

The fishing this weekend slowed down a little bit with the full moon on saturday, but the fish that showed up were healthy. Capt. Jaime Nevares aboard the "Fishing Legend" bagged a nice 468 pounder 5 miles North of the Airport in San Juan. Capt. Pitain Martinez and the "Sea Born" also tagged and released a 325 pounder. Both "Paolo" and "Brava" released fish in the 200 to 250 pound range. I fished aboard Gabriel Perez' 23 foot Mako and we had a nice 400 pounder on but lost it after a brief battle. Farther up the coast in Fajardo Capt. Eduardo Alcaide tagged and released a 400 pounder and caught an 80 pound yellowfin tuna. Yellowfins were present all of last week and throughout the weekend, with lots of fish in the 30 to 60 pound range. Capt. Puchy Sanabria aboard "Grand Illusion" caught two 50 pounders on 6/10, caught four 50 to 70 pounders and missed two blue marlin (one over 500 pounds) on 6/11, and released a 350 blue on 6/12 capping off 3 good days of fishing. Mind you these were half day charters... I will keep the reports comming as prime time (July, August & September) is near. Tight lines, Juanca. |

If there is any indication by what's going on right now, it should be a hell of a season. This past weekend (June 7-8) was very ood with the quarter moon rising. One of the local clubs had an all ladies tournament and 11 boats fished the event. In the end they caught and released about 8 blues and put one in the boat. Mari Munoz was the winner catching the 460 pounder saturday aboard "La Valentina". "Valentina" also had 2 bites on sunday which they pulled the hooks on, including a fish estimated over 500 lbs. The "Jaketona", who also fished the event, lost a 500 pounder after a 2 hour fight to pulled hooks. Charter boats also had good success, as Capt. Omar Orraca aboard "First Lady" released a blue and a white on a half day trip on saturday morning and Capt. Pitain Martinez aboard "Sea Born" released a 280 pounder on a half day trip sunday afternoon. Local private boats also had a good weekend: "Paolo" was 1/1 on saturday and 1/3 on sunday, "Osimar" was 1/2 saturday, "Four-C-Sons" was 1/2 sunday, "Brava" was 0/1 on saturday and 0/3 on sunday. Yesterday (monday) Sea Born tagged & released a 375 pounder. The crew of the "Paolo" is out today so I'll let you guys know... Tight lines, Juanca. |

The team aboard the 54ft Bertram "Sea Wish" caught the 359 pound blue and tagged another to seal the victory. The team aboard "Erik" finished in second place with 2 releases. The Sea Born also released a nice blue in the 400 pound range in San Juan last week. Blue marlin season is on!!! Tight lines, Juanca. |

Well guys, it's tournament time in Puerto Rico and it has started off with a blast! The Club Nautico de La Parguera on the southern coast of the island hosted their annual blue marlin event this past weekend and had some great fishing. Thirty one boats fished the event and ended up tagging 32 blues. Three boats tagged 3 blue marlin apiece, but the NORDO II won on time. The unfortunate news came from the 53ft Viking CANI who hooked a whopper just before lines out. Angler Eugenio Rosas fought the fish for almost 3 hours on 80 pound line and got it to the boat tail wrapped. They made it to the scales 15 minutes late and the fish weighed 559 pounds. Tough luck on a nice one... In the north coast some blues were caught over the weekend. The Sea Born released one in San Juan and the Tropical III tagged one and caught 5 nice yellowfins 35-40 pounds. Next weekend the Ponce Yacht & Fishing Club in the southern coast hosts their event so I'll let you know...Tight Lines, Juanca. |

Well the moon is starting to rise and anticipation is high for the first good showing of blue marlin here in the north coast of P.R. Last weekend the Sea Born raised one blue and the Grand Illusion raised a blue & a white, so things are starting to get interesting. Some big dolphin and school yellowfin tuna were also sighted. Usually we see some of the biggest blues caught in May and June, so I'll keep you guys informed. The kingfish bite has been good the past few weeks. Capt. Marcos Henke in Fajardo has been catching them daily up to 40 pounds. I had a chance to fish last saturday with Harold Vicente aboard his 25ft Sea Craft and had 3 nice smokers on, but ended up catching just one of 31 pounds. The weekend before Harold and good buddy Javier Sepulveda from Sunday Fishing caught a 38 pounder. Late afternoon and night fishing for tarpon has produced some very nice silver kings, including a 125 pounder on 16 lb. tippet (fly) for Capt. Nico Guzman. Tight lines, Juanca. |

Jose Ramon Jr. also caught the Post 50's and his first billfish, a sail, during the event. He was also the tournament's top angler. Largest dorado weighed in the event was 53 pounds. Traditionally February through April is a slow time of the year on Puerto Rico's North Coast, but this year things still have not slowed down! Yesterday Capt. Marcos Hanke ran a half-day afternoon charter aboard his 22ft Cat in Fajardo and was 1/2 on sailfish and lost a small blue marlin to pulled hooks. He also had a nice yellowfin tuna that broke off... The Sea Born in San Juan also released a 350 pound blue last week. In the southern coast Dorado season is in full swing and the blue marlin are also present. One boat in the port of Ponce caught 20 nice dorado, and released 2 blue marlin. The tarpon fishing in the lagoons is producing some really big fish. Case in point angler Luis Falcon fishing with Capt. Nico Guzman released a 160 pound silver king on March 10. The fish measured 72.5" short and 42" girth. Nice fat one! Capt. Nico also released a 100 and a 110 yesterday, March 12. The Overnight Tarpon tournament (a 28 hour non-stop marathon) is scheduled for March 22-23 and should be interesting. I'll let you guys know... |

Winds from 20 to 25 knots made for heavy seas this past week but the local charter boats had some good fishing. Capt. Hector Lopez aboard the SEA BORN had a half-day charter on Thursday, Feb. 20, and tagged and released 2 blue marlin! Capt. Puchy Sanabria aboard GRAND ILLUSION had a full day charter on friday, Feb. 21, and went 1/5 on white marlin tagging a 50 pounder and was 1/2 on blue marlin (double-header)losing the big one and tagging the smaller one. He also caught a big dolphin to round out a great day. Puchy went back at it on saturday, Feb. 22, and tagged a sailfish, lost a white marlin, and caught 6 big dorado 20 - 35 pounds. Sunday, Feb. 23, Puchy caught 2 more big dorado but saw no billfish... Capt. Rafael Caicedo reports good fishing out of Cabo Rojo on the southern coast of Puerto Rico. He fished friday, Feb. 21, and tagged a small blue marlin, caught 4 big dolphin and 2 wahoo. I also got a report from Alexis Barbosa who fished out of Ponce (also in the southern coast) on saturday, Feb. 8, and they tagged 2 blue marlin in the 150 to 200 pound range and caught several nice dorado. The tournament season is just about to get going in the southern coast so I will post the results as they come in... Tight lines, Juanca. |

Guy Harvey and his ESPN film crew were here doing a special on the tarpon fishing in the backcountry Feb. 17-19 with Capt. Omar Orraca. They got good footage with 3 boats releasing tarpon in the 50 to 100 pound range. Capt. Nico Guzman aboard TIGHT LOOP also had the hot hand as his charter clients caught a 110 pounder on monday and a 90 pounder on tuesday. The big fish are returning to the lagoons from the ocean and things are getting interesting! Tight Lines, Juanca. |

Fishing has been excellent off the north coast of Puerto Rico this winter. Boats fishing from Arecibo to Fajardo have enjoyed great dolphin fishing which is just winding down. The 31' Bertram LA PANA out of Cangrejos Yacht Club caught 117 dolphin and 3 wahoo in one day! Billfishing has also been outstanding with small blue marlin, white marlin and sailfish all present in good numbers between November 2002 and January 2003. Fishing a local tournament at Club Nautico de San Juan aboard the 37ft Southern Cross VALENTINA, Capt. Juanca Torruella, owner Israel Rivera and Guili Barlia caught 2 blue marlin and 3 sailfish in one day to win the one day event. All fish were caught with 12 and 20 pound lines. Another San Juan boat, MAR CARIBE, a 45' Hatteras, caught a blue, a white and 3 sails for a grand slam in January. Weather has been rough in February but VALENTINA slugged it out Valentines day and caught 7 nice Yellowfin Tuna and was 1/2 on sailfish. In the backcountry the big tarpon are showing up in the lagoons. I will keep you guys informed. Tight lines, Juanca. |

Just finished fishing Club Deportivo, Mayaquez, Puerto Rico. Talking about Southern hospitality the entire Club could not have been better. Thanks to Papo for helping with all of our accomondations and to Pochi our local mate who put us on the fish. Fishing was a little slow from there normal fall Blue Marlin bite. We fished Desecheo, Pinchicho, and Placers averaging two Blue bites a day in the 150 lb. range-perfect for 30# tackle. We are now in Venezuela where the bite is starting to heat up with some nice Blues and multiple Whites showing up with the Sails. Will start fishing Thursday-five days with the fly rod.
