Celebrating a Legacy: Viking’s Bill Healey Inducted into MTA/NJ Hall of Fame

The Legacy of a Visionary Leader

Bill Healey, co-founder of the Viking Yacht Company, has been honored with induction into the Marine Trades Association of New Jersey (MTA/NJ) Hall of Fame. This recognition is a testament to his profound impact on the marine industry and his enduring legacy at Viking, which remains a family-owned powerhouse in boatbuilding. Under Bill’s leadership, Viking thrived, navigating through challenges like the Luxury Tax repeal, which had severely impacted the industry. His leadership style was personal and hands-on; he was known for his routine bike rides around the plant to connect with and oversee his team.

A Family’s Commitment to Excellence

The Healey family has been at the helm of Viking Yacht Company for over 60 years, demonstrating unwavering commitment and resilience through various industry cycles. Pat Healey, Bill’s son and the current President and CEO of Viking, reflects on the company’s philosophy of making a “better boat every day,” a mantra instilled by his father and still the guiding principle of the company. This approach has not only fostered continuous improvement but has also ensured that Viking maintains its edge over competitors.

Growth and Innovation in Boatbuilding

Starting from modest beginnings in 1964 with just “17 barren acres and a winter storage shed,” Viking has expanded to nearly a quarter-mile long plant in New Gretna, supplemented by the Mullica facility. Together, these sites encompass about 1 million square feet of manufacturing space. In the last year alone, Viking and its sister brand Valhalla have produced 174 boats, ranging from 38 to 90 feet in length. This scale of operation underscores Viking’s significant role in the marine industry and its commitment to innovation and quality.

The company continues to set benchmarks in the industry, fostering a culture of excellence that honors the legacy of its founders. With continued growth and innovation, Viking Yacht Company is poised to maintain its leadership in the marine industry, making Bill Healey’s vision a continuing reality for years to come.

Bill Healey’s induction into the MTA/NJ Hall of Fame not only honors his personal achievements and visionary leadership but also celebrates the enduring influence of a family that has become synonymous with top-tier boatbuilding. This accolade is a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to excellence in marine craftsmanship and to the community of boatbuilders he cherished.
