There’s nothing quite like preparing sushi with fresh fish, whether you’re a professional chef, a home cook, or someone who loves catching your own fresh fish. When the fish is fresh, the possibilities are endless, from delicate sashimi to flavorful nigiri. While sushi has long been a favorite among seafood lovers, it’s also an incredibly rewarding dish to make at home or even onboard. With the right ingredients and tools, sushi made easy becomes a reality for anyone.

Must-Have Ingredients for Sushi Made Easy

To make good sushi rice, you typically need four things: rice vinegar, kombu, sugar, and short-grain Japanese sushi rice. However, while working in Alaska last summer, I discovered Tamanoi Sushi Seasoning. Tamanoi is an instant sushi rice powder that really is a game-changer for sushi rice. It’s a convenient alternative for those trying easy sushi recipes and is perfect for storing on a boat or in a small kitchen. You can buy a pack of five on Amazon for about $15.

Classic Sushi Flavor Made Easy

You also need the classic combination of soy sauce and wasabi to complement the best sushi ingredients. The best nigiri in the world features a small amount of wasabi on the underside of thinly sliced fish, placed on top of the rice, and then brushed with soy sauce. My personal preference is smoked shoyu instead of regular soy sauce. I like a wasabi paste called S&B, which is available in most major grocery stores. For a flavor twist, I like to add a pinch of toasted sesame oil to enhance the fish. The flavor combinations are virtually endless when it comes to making sushi on the boat or at home, but keeping it classic is never a bad idea.

Basic Ingredients to Stock for Sushi-Making

1. Japanese Short-Grain Rice – This type of rice has the perfect stickiness and texture needed for sushi. It’s readily available at most supermarkets or online.

2. Rice Vinegar – For those making sushi rice from scratch, rice vinegar is essential to achieve the perfect balance of tang and sweetness.

3. Soy Sauce and Wasabi – Staple ingredients for any sushi lover. Home cooks can find these at nearly any grocery store, with premium options like smoked shoyu for those looking to elevate the experience.

4. Nori Sheets (Seaweed) – Used for making rolls or temaki (hand rolls), these can be found in the international aisle of most grocery stores.

5. Pickled Ginger (Gari) – A common sushi accompaniment, adding a refreshing flavor that balances the richness of the fish.

A Simple Tuna Nigiri Recipe

If you’re looking for an easy sushi recipe to get started, this tuna nigiri is a great choice for both beginners and experienced sushi lovers:

TUNA NIGIRI INGREDIENTS

• Your preferred tuna cut

• 1 cup of short grain Japanese sushi rice

1 packet of Tamanoi sushi rice seasoning

• Wasabi paste

• Soy sauce

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Prepare your rice according to the directions. Add in sushi rice seasoning and set aside to cool slightly.

2. Thinly slice your tuna. I really like 1/16 to ⅛ inch for a sashimi or nigiri slice.

Tip: If you’re having trouble getting a good slice, try placing your fish in the freezer for 15-25 minutes. Use the entire blade of your knife, starting at the base and pulling the tip all the way through your fish.

3. Once you have your fish sliced, place a tiny bit of wasabi paste on your finger and rub it on the bottom side of each slice.

4. Make your rice balls. Wet your finger with water and ball up 1 tbsp. of rice, shaping it in a small oval that is just slightly smaller than your fish slice.

5. Place your fish wasabi-side down on top of the rice ball and lightly brush with soy sauce.

Sushi Essentials – The Tools You Need

To help you save time we have researched and added links to a few highly rated sushi tools and key ingredients that are widely available to enhance your experience of sushi-making.

1. Rice Cooker or Instant Pot

A must-have for preparing perfect sushi rice. Many home cooks may already own one, and it ensures consistent results. For smaller kitchens, we suggest a multi-purpose cooker like the Instant Pot, which can also be used for other recipes.

Here is a highly rated Instant Pot.

2. Bamboo Rolling Mat (Makisu)

This classic tool is *essential for sushi-making* at home, especially when it comes to sushi rolls (maki). Bamboo rolling mats are inexpensive, widely available, and give you the experience of rolling sushi like a pro. Check out these highly rated bamboo rolling mats.

3. Sharp Knife (Sashimi Knife or Santoku Knife)

A sharp knife is crucial for thinly slicing fish or vegetables. A *sashimi knife* is recommended for its precision, but a well-maintained Santoku or chef’s knife can work just as well.

4. Wooden Sushi Rice Paddle (Shamoji)

This flat paddle is used to mix rice and vinegar. While any flat spoon or spatula can replace it in a pinch, a dedicated sushi paddle makes the process more authentic.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sushi-Making

Q: How do I make sushi rice without Tamanoi?

Mix 2 cups of cooked sushi rice with 4 tbsp. of rice vinegar, 2 tbsp. white sugar, and 1 tsp. kosher salt.

Q: What is smoked shoyu and where can I get it?

Smoked shoyu is a small-batch artisanal Japanese-style soy sauce that will really elevate any dish. You can easily find it on Amazon, and my favorite brand is Haku.

Q: Rice cookers, how do I use them?

I really can’t stress this enough: READ the directions. Each rice cooker is different and has unique settings, but if you don’t have a rice cooker, you can definitely make rice in a regular pot with a well-fitted lid.
