Experience the authentic flavors of Sicily with this seafood pasta recipe.
Introduction
When I first learned I would be traveling to Sicily, I was over the moon. The thought of catching a swordfish in the Strait of Messina—the narrow passage that separates mainland Italy from Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean—filled me with excitement. Beyond the potential fishing adventure, I was eager to immerse myself in Sicily’s rich culture, history, and, most importantly, its renowned cuisine.
The Swordfish Season in the Strait of Messina
To my dismay, I discovered that I wouldn’t be visiting during the swordfish season, which runs from June through September. The Strait of Messina is famous for its dynamic marine life, especially the migratory patterns of swordfish that have been tracked by local fishermen for generations. Fishing here isn’t just a livelihood; it’s a cultural ritual steeped in tradition.
Discovering Sicily’s Diverse Seafood
Despite missing the swordfish season, that didn’t stop me from enjoying all the seafood Sicily has to offer. The island’s waters teem with a variety of marine life. Sardines and anchovies are among the most popular catches, integral to local dishes that have evolved over centuries. The surrounding seas also yield mussels, Mediterranean red prawns, and, of course, calamari.
Sicily is one of the most conquered islands in the world, a fact that contributes to its incredibly unique food culture. Each wave of conquerors—from the Greeks and Romans to the Arabs and Normans—left an indelible mark on the island’s culinary landscape.
A Memorable Meal: Stuffed Sardines and Seafood Pasta
One of my favorite meals in Sicily was a dish of stuffed sardines, paired with a seafood pasta that was nothing short of awe-inspiring. While I had made similar dishes back home, tasting this uniquely Sicilian creation in its native context was truly unreal. The combination of fresh tomatoes, mussels, shrimp, white wine, garlic, and calamari underscored how deeply the island’s food scene is influenced by its history and fishing heritage.

Recipe: Sicilian Seafood Pasta
I couldn’t leave Sicily without bringing a piece of it back home. Below is my take on the Sicilian seafood pasta that left such a lasting impression on me.
Ingredients:
- 1 lb. spaghetti
- 1 bag of mussels
- ½ lb. calamari, sliced into rings and then halved
- ½ lb. prawns, peeled and deveined
- 4 ripe tomatoes, finely chopped
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- ½ cup white wine
- Olive oil
- Fresh parsley, chopped
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Red chili flakes (optional, for a bit of heat)
Instructions:
- Prepare the Pasta: Cook the spaghetti in a large pot of salted, boiling water according to package instructions. For a true Sicilian al dente texture, cook it about two to three minutes less than recommended.
- Cook the Seafood: In a large pan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté until fragrant. Increase the heat to high, add the prawns and calamari, and sauté for one to two minutes until they start to turn opaque.
- Add Mussels and Wine: Add the mussels to the pan along with the white wine. Cover and cook until the mussels open, about three to four minutes. Discard any mussels that do not open.
- Add Tomatoes and Simmer: Stir in the chopped tomatoes and cook for another two to three minutes, until the tomatoes are soft and the sauce has slightly thickened.
- Combine and Serve: Toss the cooked spaghetti with the seafood sauce in the pan. Season with salt, pepper, and red chili flakes if you prefer a bit of heat. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley before serving.
Tips for Making This Dish Offshore
I won’t say that this recipe is easily adaptable to make offshore, but it’s not impossible. Prep your ingredients, including cooking your pasta ahead of time, and then follow from step two when you’re ready.
