Understanding the Sources of Sound on the Water
Sailboats can be some of the most beautiful craft on the water. There’s an elegance in cruising a sailing yacht under wind power, hearing nothing but the wind and water. On most boats, this results in a relatively quiet experience.
However, even sailing craft generate increasing levels of noise as speed increases.

A Noisier Ride: Sportfishing Vessels
Now let’s consider sportfishing vessels, which operate at high speeds with motorized propulsion. Noise comes from not just our surroundings, but from all the onboard machinery.
Engine noise, air resistance, water turbulence, and installed equipment all combine to raise sound levels dramatically.

What Creates Undesirable Noise?
Some of the most common sources include:
- Wind and water (amplified at speeds over 30 knots)
- Generators, HVAC, and hydraulics
- Large diesel engines, especially at high speeds
- Driveline and exhaust systems
On high-performance sportfishing yachts, engine noise is the primary contributor.

Subjectivity and Sound
While we can measure decibels with precision, perception of noise is highly subjective.
Factors that influence sound experience:
- Frequency of the sound
- Location on the vessel
- Personal hearing sensitivity
For instance, wind may dominate on the bridge while engines and equipment overpower the salon.
Engineering Quiet: Design and Construction Factors
Propeller noise and shafting arrangement also play critical roles. On some yachts, owner/builder contracts specify maximum decibel levels by location, ensuring comfort in areas like the master stateroom.

Hull Construction and Noise Control
Different materials offer different levels of noise suppression:
- Aluminum: prone to vibration and noise
- Fiberglass: better, but can still be loud in single-skin designs
- Sandwich laminates with foam core: help dampen vibration
- Cold-molded wood hulls: excellent at damping noise and vibration

Mass is your ally when it comes to noise abatement. Additional core material or products specifically designed for noise suppression can make a significant impact.
