April 2026 — Captain on a Run with Tony Carrizosa: This edition of the Furuno Captain on a Run features Release Marine International Division leader Captain Tony Carrizosa of Team Galati, who delivered one of the most decisive performances of the season during the final leg of the Los Sueños Triple Crown.

Carrizosa overtook Captain Rudy Arguedas aboard Pura Vida following a dramatic finish in Leg 3, swinging the momentum of the International Division race. With the win, Carrizosa now leads the division by 550 Captain of the Year points (COTYP) and added another 250 COTYP by securing the Overall Series Championship.

In a division known for tight races and world-class competition, this was a defining moment.

A Final Day That Changed Everything

The Los Sueños Series is always a battleground, but the final leg consistently carries the most weight. This year was no different.

Heading into the last day, Carrizosa and Team Galati were behind and chasing. Captain Austin Robins aboard Max Bet had built a strong lead, fueled by an impressive 45 sailfish on Day 1, and maintained control through the early part of the event.

“We were behind going into the final day,” Carrizosa explained. “We knew what we had to do and we had to make up a big gap.”

That gap was significant. By Carrizosa’s estimate, they needed to outperform Max Bet by roughly 900 points to take both the leg and the overall championship.

What followed was one of the most productive final days in recent memory.

Team Galati put together a staggering 41 sailfish release day, their best of the tournament, and the single performance that flipped the standings.

The Turning Point Offshore

The day didn’t start fast.

“We had a bite right away and caught it, but then it slowed down,” Carrizosa said. “We only had a couple fish early, and the other boat was getting bit pretty good.”

Like many tournament days in Costa Rica, the fleet began to stack up on productive water. Carrizosa found himself in a tight pack of boats—too tight.

“It went from three boats to thirty boats in about fifteen minutes,” he said. “I couldn’t turn left or right. It’s just not how I like to fish.”

That decision point—stay in the fleet or break away—defined the day.

Carrizosa chose to leave.

“We just picked up and got out of there. I wasn’t running to a spot—I just wanted clean water.”

Trusting Instincts and Reading the Ocean

What followed was a clinic in instinct and execution.

Rather than running to numbers or forcing a move, Carrizosa relied on feel, sonar interpretation, and timing.

“Every time I thought about moving, we’d catch one,” he said. “So we just stayed with it.”

The bite began to build. Singles turned into doubles. Then triples.

“It just turned on,” he said. “We had a quad, multiple triples, doubles back-to-back and it was just one of those in the bite windows.”

Using sonar in a crowded and churned-up ocean added another layer of difficulty. Fish were harder to distinguish through prop wash and whitewater, but Carrizosa and his team stayed disciplined.

“You had to trust what you were seeing,” he said. “Sometimes it looked like bubbles, but you’d commit to it and it would end up being a fish.”

The Final Hour Surge

With time winding down, Team Galati made one more move running five miles to a new zone late in the day.

That decision paid off.

“We picked up and ran, shut down, and caught about 15 more fish in the last hour,” Carrizosa said.

That late push proved decisive.

By day’s end, Carrizosa had not only erased the deficit but surpassed Captain Austin Robins and Max Bet by a margin large enough to claim both the leg win and the overall Triple Crown title.

In total, Team Galati outperformed their closest competitor by a double-digit fish margin on the final day—an extraordinary swing at that level of competition.

Championship Implications

The win reshaped the International Division standings.

Carrizosa’s late surge delivered:

  • +500 COTYP for the tournament win
  • +250 COTYP for the Overall Series Championship
  • 550-point lead in the International Division standings

A Statement Performance

The Los Sueños finale once again proved why it’s one of the most important events on the schedule.

Carrizosa and Team Galati didn’t just capitalize but they executed under pressure and delivered when it mattered most.

A 41-sailfish final day. A come-from-behind victory. A championship secured.

That’s what a Captain on a Run looks like.
