White Marlin Open Expands for 2026 with New “Fish 3 of 6” Format and Non-Sonar Division

The 53rd Annual White Marlin Open, presented by Pure Lure, returns to Ocean City August 3-8, 2026 with major updates designed to give teams more flexibility, expand competition opportunities, and enhance the overall tournament experience both on and off the water.

Widely recognized as the world’s largest and richest billfish tournament, the White Marlin Open continues to evolve after more than five decades of competition, thousands of participating boats, and over $113 million awarded throughout its history.

New “Fish 3 of 6” Tournament Format

One of the biggest changes for 2026 is the introduction of a new “Fish 3 of 6” format. Teams will now be allowed to select any three fishing days during the six-day tournament window.

The new structure gives captains and crews additional flexibility to work around weather conditions, sea states, and fishing strategies while maintaining the integrity and competitiveness that has defined the event for decades.

New Non-Sonar Division Added

In response to increased industry discussion surrounding omni-directional sonar technology, tournament organizers have also introduced a new Non-Sonar Division for boats not utilizing omni-directional sonar systems.

The division is intended to create a more level competitive category for traditional teams while adding another dynamic layer to the tournament structure.

Daily Big Fish Charity Entry Introduced

Another addition for 2026 is a new Daily Big Fish Charity Added Entry Level. The category will allow participants to compete for daily prize opportunities while also supporting several charitable organizations.

Proceeds from the division will benefit:

  • Coastal Hospice
  • Seaside Athletic Center
  • Believe In Tomorrow

The initiative continues the White Marlin Open’s longstanding connection to community-focused fundraising efforts.

Updated Small Boat Division

For 2026, the tournament’s Small Boat Division has also been expanded and will now include vessels 40 feet and under, opening the division to a broader range of competitors.

Tournament registration is currently open and will continue through August 2, 2026.

Marlin Fest Expands to Six Days

Running alongside the tournament, Marlin Fest, presented by the Maryland Army National Guard, will also expand to a full six-day schedule.

The Ocean City Inlet will once again serve as the centerpiece for fans, families, and tournament spectators with:

  • Free admission
  • Live entertainment
  • Food and drink vendors
  • Interactive exhibits
  • Beachfront live-streamed weigh-ins
  • Daily fleet arrivals at the scales

The live weigh-ins remain one of the signature attractions of the tournament and continue to draw thousands of spectators throughout the week.

Tournament Leadership Focused on Evolution

“We’re always listening to our participants and looking for ways to evolve while staying true to what makes this tournament so special,” said Madelyne Motsko, Tournament Director of the White Marlin Open. “From the flexibility of the new format to the addition of new divisions and community-focused initiatives, this year is shaping up to be one of the most dynamic yet.”

Sponsors and Industry Support

The 2026 event features support from a broad range of marine industry companies including Viking Yachts, Jarrett Bay Boatworks, Bayliss Boatworks, Garmin International, Yamaha, Seakeeper, Cummins, Spencer Yachts, and many others across the sportfishing, marine electronics, hospitality, and boating sectors.
