“Native Son” Triumphs in the 87th Silver Sailfish Derby with 11 Releases

Challenging Conditions and Skilled Angling at the Silver Sailfish Derby

It takes more than just a deep appreciation for the fishery off the Palm Beaches to master the art of catching and releasing the esteemed sailfish. The Silver Sailfish Derby, a pinnacle event during the height of the sailfish season in early January, puts even the finest captains and crews to the test. With a sold-out fleet of 50 boats adhering to the four-line rule, a tradition deeply rooted in the history of the tournament, every bite becomes crucial. The spectacle of landing multiple fish simultaneously is not just a show of skill but a necessity for climbing the competitive leaderboard. This year, Captain Art Sapp and the Native Son showcased their exceptional prowess, clinching victory on the final day of the World’s Oldest Sailfish Tournament.

Impressive Tournament Statistics and Unpredictable Weather

The 2024 Derby witnessed a total of 149 Atlantic sailfish releases and 13 taggings. Despite calm offshore conditions and light rain on the first day, challenging traditional kite flying and live bait presentations, the fleet demonstrated remarkable sailfishing skills. The tournament, headquartered at Sailfish Marina on Palm Beach Shores, saw last year’s winner, the 48’ Viking Priceless, spark intense competition among participants.

Their strategy and adaptability culminated in a total of 11 sailfish releases, securing their well-deserved victory.
