Boshamp’s Seafood and Oyster House, located in the heart of the Destin Harbor in the Florida Panhandle, is a beautiful locally owned venue. Its casual setting and waterfront dining makes the place a laid-back experience with the simple goal of providing quality ingredients and a family friendly atmosphere.

From White Tablecloths to Gulf-to-Table Excellence

“My parents original restaurant, The Flamingo Cafe, was a white tablecloth restaurant and saw that in our area, there was a real need for a restaurant that served excellent food with a laid-back feel,” said owner Miller Phillips. “So when we opened Boshamp’s, we tried to make it a place where people would feel comfortable coming off the beach and going somewhere great to eat without feeling like they had to get too dressed up.”

Phillips grew up in his parents’ restaurant, and after graduating high school, he majored in Hospitality Management at the University of Alabama. He owned and operated a restaurant in Birmingham, but missed his hometown of Destin. Right around that time, his father reached out to him and told him that the property that had been owned and operated by his parents for almost 30 years was going up for lease. Phillips went home and was joined by the chef that worked for his father, and together they opened the restaurant that would later become Boshamp’s. Shortly thereafter, they outgrew the space they had for processing food and opened the Lucky Dog Seafood Company.

The Menu: A Celebration of Southern Gulf Cuisine

Its menu consists of Gulf-to-table southern cuisine, featuring a variety of good food ranging from selections off the oyster bar to a good old-fashioned Angus burger. It also has a variety of custom cocktails, such as the Doggie Paddle (tequila and sparkling pink grapefruit juice) and the Boshamp’s Seltzer (seasonal fruit-infused vodka and club soda). One of the highlights on the menu is the Snapper Destin: grilled snapper over mashed potatoes and collard greens, served with shrimp, crab meat and honey roasted nuts, a recipe that has been in the Phillips’ family for over 40 years. There are also catch-of-the-day features daily, and sometimes there will be different dishes such as softshell crab or tilefish that the chef will make into a specialty dish.

Lucky Dog Seafood Company: The Heart of Boshamp’s Kitchen

Boshamp’s prides itself on its transparent Gulf-to-table means of processing its food. All of its seafood is locally sourced — often from the fishermen that Phillips grew up with, or from Phillips’ own boat. The Lucky Dog Seafood Company, located in front of Boshamp’s, was opened specifically for the sourcing, grading and preppiing of all the seafood served at the restaurant. “Not everyone is knowledgeable about seafood like we are, in the same way that I’m not knowledgeable about pork or steak production,” Phillips said. “It’s really amazing to be able to show people the passion we have for what we do. A lot of people appreciate the quality food and are willing to pay for it if they see what they’re paying for, and we try to be as transparent as possible.”

Engaging the Community: Events and Tournaments

Since Destin is the home of one of the largest charter fleets in the US, there are plenty of locals around Boshamp’s. Tourist season ranges from the beginning of March to the beginning of November, and there are plenty of people in the fish circuits from Alabama and Louisiana that will stop by. Boshamp’s also holds a cobia tournament in April, and many seasonal fishermen come in for tournaments like the Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic.

Dining with a View: Waterfront Ambiance at Boshamp’s

“We have a marina behind Boshamp’s, so there are a lot of them that will come and hang out for the live music and different events that we do,” Phillips said. “The bosses enjoy that a lot, especially when they’re around for the tournaments.”
