Best Marine Engines: Power Options for 2025

Modern Marine Engines Offer Technologically Sophisticated Systems, Higher Horsepower, and Less Weight, With Improved Efficiency as Well

If you’ve been paying any attention at all to the boating market, you’ll know that power choices just keep getting better and better. This has allowed builders to create larger and larger boats, as horsepower increases with the larger models, but innovation isn’t limited to those huge diesels. Whether you’re looking at mid-range diesels, or the latest generator technology, or even state-of-the-art outboards, you have a lot of great options from which to choose. Here are just a few of them.

Caterpillar C32B and C2.2B

Recently, Caterpillar has introduced the C32B engine with power options ranging from 2025mhp to 2433mhp.  With over 30 vessels now in service, the C32B has proven it is the perfect fit for your new motoryacht, sportfisher, or repower project.

Building on the success of the C32B, the all new C2.2B adds to the Cat Marine sportfishing portfolio with a modern, compact genset platform in 18 and 25 kWe prime ratings. Coming in mid 2025, the C2.2B differentiates itself amongst other genset offerings and stands out from the crowd of plain white boxes, which has become the sound-enclosed genset default. It was designed from the ground up by Caterpillar Marine’s design team, with easy installation and easy operation in mind. Installation is as plug-and-play as it gets, with all the essential fluid connections available neatly organized on the enclosure end panel, with both port- and starboard-side service options available. The user operation panel features intuitive controls with “traffic light” colored command prompts ensuring easy operation, with a more advanced control option integrating multi-genset load share and power management capabilities. This makes battery or solar integration easily achievable.

“Cat Marine ensures battery and solar integration are easily achievable with this next-generation genset.”

Volvo display

Volvo Penta Assisted Docking System

Originally made for Volvo Penta IPS drivelines, the Assisted Docking system provides better control when docking by automating your intentions and compensating for variables like wind and current. It seamlessly integrates the advanced sensors of Volvo Penta’s GPS-based Dynamic Positioning System (DPS) to offer an unparalleled docking experience, even in difficult conditions. With the joystick, you control the boat’s path and speed, while the system compensates for elements like wind and current. Using the DPS, the system knows the boat’s exact position and heading. Push the joystick forward, and the system lays out a straight path that the boat follows, continuously fine-tuning steering and thrust. Release the joystick, and the boat will maintain its position. Rotate around a fixed position by turning the joystick. To secure your position against the dock, push the joystick to the side and activate the “Side Push” feature on your display.

  • Automates docking while compensating for wind and current
  • Uses Volvo Penta’s GPS-based Dynamic Positioning System (DPS)
  • Offers joystick control for intuitive maneuvering
