How To Write A Better Fishing Deckhand Job Description

If you post a job with a short or vague description, you are doing yourself and those persons responding a time-consuming disservice. We recommend answering a few basic questions with any post you publish on InTheBite. Check out the “vague” or “low effort” job post below.

Mate Wanted (Example)

Seeking a full time mate onboard an 80’ Sportfish and towing a 39′ center console. Traveling Florida and the Bahamas.

Anyone interested in the position will have lots of questions that could have easily been answered prior to any candidate responding. To help post a better job description, we have created a very simple list of questions to follow in your job description. A direct and precise description will ultimately yield better candidates who are more in line with the type of person you need to hire.

Witha little more effort the same post could have read:

Mate Wanted (Improved Version)

As you can read from the “Improved Version” example, adding a few more details will provide a much clearer representation of the deckhand you are seeking. You want the best candidate and this guide is intended to help.
