Innovative Tech Trends Transforming Sportfishing Yachts

Introduction to Modern Yachting Technologies

Technology continues to change, and the newest yachts get to enjoy some of these advances. While the main purpose of our sportfishing craft (finding and catching fish) doesn’t change, the methods and toys on the boats constantly evolve. Hopefully, the new technology enhances the experience—either by improving the performance of the boat, or by expanding the enjoyment of the operator and passengers. Either way, the designer, and builder, need to understand the technology and optimize the design to accommodate it. Let’s examine a few examples.

Revolutionizing Performance: Engineering Breakthroughs

From an engineering standpoint, there have been many advancements over the last several years that have helped us get the most possible performance out of our designs. Obviously, great advancements have been made by engine and gear manufacturers to increase efficiency and raise power-to-weight ratios. But our discussion here covers other stand-alone products that have gained notoriety by improving the efficiency of our vessels.

Gyroscopic Stabilization: A New Era in Yachting Comfort

Gyroscopic stabilization really stands out in that regard. Large yachts that always run at low displacement speeds have traditionally used stabilizer fins. But these don’t work well on high-performance planing hulls, like most of our sportfishing boats. When gyros became available for recreational boats, it really changed expectations. Now, with zero added drag (except for the weight of the gyro in the hull), roll is controlled at zero and low speeds (they operate at higher speeds, but are not as impactful in that region).

This technology has almost become standard on all mid- to large-size boats and yachts being built. And older boats without gyro stabilization are being refit to take advantage of the benefits this affords. I once had a client who has owned and run various sportfishing yachts. He commented that he would never own a boat without a gyro, and his wife would never set foot on a boat without one. Gyros have truly been a game changer in the world of recreational boating.

Smart Ride Control Systems: The Future of Nautical Navigation

Another product that is becoming commonplace is smart ride control systems. I’m talking interceptors which, with proper programming, operate autonomously, maintaining desired running trim and limiting heel angles while running at speed. Interceptors are flat plates that extend below the hull bottom at the transom. When introduced into the flow, they create a high-pressure region which pushes the stern up, and consequently, the bow down. They work like trim tabs, but are more efficient as they induce less drag for a given amount of bow down moment as compared with tabs. With ride control activated, port and starboard interceptors can operate in tandem, mostly for trim control, or individually, helping the hull to ride with low- to no-heel angle.

A newer performance related technology is wake adjusted appendages. This includes struts, rudders and propellers. Using another design technology, computational fluid dynamics, or CFD, the designer can optimize the shape of the running gear to minimize the amount of drag they create in the high-speed flow. Basically, these are noticeable as the strut and rudder are not straight, but curved (in multiple directions) to be as flow-friendly as possible. Wake-adjusted appendages can provide more speed, but also better fuel burn, and noticeably quieter and smoother operation due to reduced vibration.

Advancements in Operator Interface and Connectivity

One segment of products used in our boats that seems to be constantly changing, and improving, are the electronics. Displays have gone from gauges, to small black and white screens, to huge color monitors which are touch-screen, displaying any and all vessel system information along with communications and navigational data. New electronics change so often, it’s not uncommon for helm stations to require re-design before the build is complete.

And these days, it’s all about connectivity. Satellite communication systems ensure passengers don’t ever have to be out of touch. Using a smart phone or tablet, an owner or captain can monitor the boat and its systems from the opposite side of the globe.

Sportfishing Yachts: Integrating Cutting-Edge Sonar Technology

Successfully raising fish typically comes down to the ability and experience of the captain and mates (with a little luck mixed in). But the latest side scanning sonar systems sure do help. In fact, some may consider these omni-directional sonar systems a game changer in their own right … and in hardcore fishing machines, they are becoming almost standard like the gyros discussed previously. Retro-fitting these systems can be a challenge, but new designs can accommodate them quite easily.

Autonomous Docking: Steering Towards the Future

So what does the future offer? Well, one feature that you can expect to start seeing is autonomous docking. Manufacturers are already offering this type of technology at different levels. Docking a large sportfish in high winds and strong current is quite different than parallel parking a car on a city street. And these new systems will help to provide confidence and lower stress while docking. Taking it a step further, fully autonomous systems will eventually become commonplace. These are not your familiar auto-pilot systems. They are smart, fully aware set-ups that allow for operation with zero operator input.

These are just a few examples of some of the new and exciting advancements that are making their way into the recreational boating world. Our sportfishing yachts get to employ many of these as decided upon by owners and captains. One thing is for sure … technology will continue to evolve, making the yachting, and fishing, experience only better and better for all on board.
