The Viking Yacht Company has launched its second-generation Viking 74, succeeding the iconic 72-footer. According to Viking Design Manager David Wilson, “The 72 was the fastest boat in our 60-plus-year history, and the 74 is the new speed king of the Viking fleet.”
Designed for Speed and Efficiency
With a top speed target rivaling the 72’s impressive 45 knots, the Viking 74 blends high performance with precision engineering. The team employed Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software to refine the hull shape, strakes, and chines—enhancing spray deflection, lift, and overall ride quality.
“Our goal is always to gain efficiency through studying a number of performance elements, including longitudinal center of gravity, hull resistance, trim angle, and modifications to the running surface.” – David Wilson
Construction and Build Quality
Hull strength and weight savings are achieved through resin infusion, optimizing the fiberglass-to-resin ratio. Additional methods such as Light Resin Transfer Molding (LRTM) and the strategic use of core materials and carbon fiber ensure a durable, high-quality finish.
