Job Description

As a sportfish captain, you will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of fishing excursions, ensuring the safety and enjoyment of passengers while navigating and operating a sportfishing vessel. You will possess excellent leadership, communication, and navigation skills, along with a deep understanding of various fishing techniques and the marine environment.

Responsibilities:

– Vessel Operation: Safely operate and navigate the sportfishing vessel, adhering to maritime regulations and best practices.
– Customer Service: Provide exceptional customer service to passengers, ensuring their comfort, safety, and enjoyment throughout the fishing trip.
– Fishing Expertise: Demonstrate proficiency in a variety of fishing techniques
– Equipment Maintenance: Conduct routine maintenance checks on fishing equipment, safety gear, and the vessel to ensure they are in proper working condition.
– Safety Protocols: Enforce strict safety protocols and emergency procedures to prevent accidents and respond effectively in case of emergencies.
– Team Management: Lead and manage a crew of deckhands, providing guidance and instruction as needed to ensure efficient operation of the vessel.
– Navigation and Route Planning: Plan and chart fishing routes based on weather conditions, seasonal patterns, and fish migration, optimizing the chances of a successful catch.
– Regulatory Compliance: Stay informed about fishing regulations, licenses, and quotas applicable to the operating area, ensuring full compliance at all times.
Communication: Maintain clear and effective communication with passengers, crew members, and port authorities to facilitate smooth operations and resolve any issues that may arise.

Qualifications:

– Captain’s License: Hold a valid captain’s license issued by the relevant maritime authority, along with any additional endorsements required for operating commercial vessels.
Experience: Have extensive experience as a captain or mate on sportfishing vessels, demonstrating proficiency in navigation, fishing techniques, and customer service.
Fishing Knowledge: Possess in-depth knowledge of various fish species, their habitats, behavior, and preferred baits, as well as proven success in catching a diverse range of game fish.
Leadership Skills: Exhibit strong leadership abilities, with the capacity to effectively manage a team, make quick decisions under pressure, and ensure a positive and productive work environment.
Safety Conscious: Prioritize safety above all else, with a thorough understanding of maritime safety protocols, emergency procedures, and risk mitigation strategies.
Communication Skills: Have excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey information clearly and effectively to passengers, crew members, and authorities.
Physical Requirements:

– Ability to work long hours at sea in varying weather conditions.
– Capable of lifting heavy objects and performing physically demanding tasks onboard.
– Strong swimming skills and comfort working in and around water.

Additional Requirements:

– Valid first aid and CPR certification.
– Clean criminal record and drug-free status.
– Positive attitude, strong work ethic, and passion for fishing and the marine environment.
